I am dividing miles per year (12000) by real world MPG (16 for V8) times the price of a premium gallon of gas (3.05) = $2,288 per year. For the V6: $1,792 per year |

Some math i used to help put things in perspective for me.
If I drove 20000km per year (12,500 miles): - V6 would consume aprox 2135 litres (@22mpg, 10.67km/100L), V8 would be 2760 litres (@17mpg, 13.8 km/100L) + the difference in price between lo grade and higher grade fuel (in Canada that's about $0.10/litre). So for my case i calculated: - Insurance difference LT vs. SS = $450/yr - Difference in monthly payments x 12, LT vs. SS = $1800 ($150 more per month, taxes in...) - Fuel costs (extra amount of fuel consumed + extra for premium fuel) = $700 The difference in driving car, with same options, LT vs SS for me was almost $3000/year, or $250/month (not even including financing). BUT, if i could swing it i sure would have and i think most people would as well..... I think i got that right.... |

Thanks for the info -
I drove the V6 (for the first time) yesterday. It is very quick. Just for fun, I did the math also and the V8 gas cost is about $225/year more as you said. That is not the show stopper - I'm looking for a 2LT - the 2SS is ~$7K more .. w/tax we are near $40K... Can't bring myself to spend $40K on a car.. |

I actually am a big fan of the LT (low price, plenty of power, sleeker front end-more like the prototype). There's a bunch of reasons why I'm getting the SS though

I reject your reality and substitute it for my own.
Great logic

Anybody can make the numbers justify what ever they need to convince themselves of what they need or can afford. In my case I was not going to get the 2SS loaded like my 2LT at a cost of $7k more or a $100. per month. Plus premium fuel, driving my commute of 70 miles per day would have added another $100. per month. This does not count the added insurance premium for the 2SS. If money was not an issue I would own a few of these Camaro's, one for each day of the week. However, in today's real world situations I am happy to have my V6 that can get 29 MPG on the way to work cruising at 70 mph and avg. 24 driving it hard when I want to. Again everyone has to justify what they can afford to themselves.

great hypothesis and analysis. Good Will Hunting-ish. Comes down to only $187 difference in gas costs over a year's time though. My fiance and I spent $130 on dinner last saturday night! One thing you haven't considered is the purchase price of a V8 vs. a V6, which you slightly allude to at the end of the thread. That's where you'll save more buying the V6 and that to me is what the majority of people would most consider when opting over a V6 or V8. But nonetheless, great gas modelized gas consumption comparison.

LOL @ 12,000 miles a year. I got my SS the week after Christmas. I am currently at 9,848 miles. Im thinking your formula won't apply to well for me. but why not run the formula again with 36,000 miles per year and see how driving more per year effects it.

If you look at the historical data when gas was above $4.00/gal the AVERAGE national price spread on the 93 was approximately $0.30. There are quite a few references to this online. For that price you could get 87 and mix in some 100 for $7.00/gal.
