Every subsea drilling rig has a blowout preventer (BOP) that is installed on the wellhead during drilling operations. They are typically worth 8-15 million depending on options. The device you are trying to talk about is called an acoustic pod. The acoustic pod is a backup device used to function the BOP in an emergency situation. There are three operating systems on the Horizon BOP - yellow pod functions, blue pod functions, and the backup remotely operated vehicle (ROV) functions. The ROV has tried to function the shear rams (valve) to seal off the well with no luck. There is a picture of this on many of the news stories showing the arm of the ROV attached to the shear ram close function. The acoustic pod is only able to perform the same functions as the ROV and thus would still be useless at fixing the Horizon leak. Something on or inside the valve seems to be broken and no amount of backup devices would be able to fix it.

P.S. - Sorry for the long post.
No need to apologize. This is very good explanation of the systems.

Thanks Mike, I have been part of manufacturing blowout preventers for four years now and could go into much more boring detail.

No, just the fabrication of the riser's, TSJ's and some structural components.

Nothing boring about it to me, but that is my line of work...

The entire concept of subsea drilling is really fascinating, but too much description/information will quickly go over the head of a non-oil and gas person. That is not to say the media shouldn't be explaining things a little better! The industry has some of the most intelligent minds in the world and we should all be thankful for the men and women that work offshore.

All nonsense about losing our go fast toys aside, people will always want to go fast, whether on a horse, a train, a gas car, or an electric car. The Tesla Roadster, upcoming Porsche 918, and prototype le mans cars are great examples. 40 years from now we'll be doing 0-60 in 3 seconds cleanly and reminiscing about our old dirty Camaro's and how they were fast for their time. If you don't believe me look at the numbers for any sports car from the 70's.

Yep it will blow right over, just like 15 people BP killed at the houston refinery, the 3 kids in WA, the giant long beach oil spill in 1990's, and now this.....it'll just blow right over.

This event is not going to affect our muscle car selection. We will have fuel powered cars for a long time to come, hopefully with more power and more efficiency!

I never said it was going to stop the production of the cars. They simply embody 'the problem' (per a certain mindset of people..ahem) - ie, the oil spill is because we need to feed these types of cars. It's not that far of a leap to make this assumption. Apparently no one here has worked with or for that matter, a card carrying weenie liberal. That is all.

Oh, nevermind.
