great thread and thanks to those posting answers for us who are still learning, my questions is what is the difference in exhaust types. For example what is a difference between an axle back or a cat back. I hear these names being associated with exhaust systems but sadly have no idea what they mean. Thanks.

Oh I know this one! I am having headers and a cat back exhaust installed today, so I recently did some homework on this. I do NOT claim to be an expert.
A cat back runs from the catalytic converters back to the tips. It's a full exhuast system. It replaces the whole exhaust from the manifold back to the tips (or from the headers back to the tips). It replaces the resonators, mufflers, the whole exhaust. An axle back is from the rear axle back to the tips. It is only a partial replacement of the exhaust. An axle back replaces basically the back section with the mufflers. You keep your stock cats and resonators in this case. How'd I do? |

If you want to see performance gains from exhaust, bite the bullet and put headers on the car. New mufflers and x-pipes aren't going to do anywhere near as much as headers will, although headers also raise the price point. If you only want some more noise, then axle-back/cat-back exhaust might be a good decision.

I think it has to do with attach points and sound but I am no expert on this. I put axle back ( street version) on mine and the dealer installed in about an hour

This is why I started this thread because I had NO clue at all, and I am Thankful for the responses. There are alot of EXPERTS but like you I am a NOOB. Took the title from a couple of books I have, Microsoft for dummies etc... so why not Modding for dummies. LOL

Kinda of an odd question about modifying.
When you mod your car what does it do to the value of it. I know an original is probably worth alot more 30 years from now, but does it really matter. I have done cosmetic mods so far with the exception of the axle back. Just was wondering. MODS SO FAR Painted on stripes. Wet sanded and re-cleared entire car. NO more orange peel. Axle back street exhaust. Heritage grille-painted with old school SS. Rear Bowtie delete-SS installed Splash guards.

Mods won't neccessarily depreciate a car, but they rarely increase the value of it at the same time. Sometimes a unique setup will sell for a good chunk of change to the right buyer, but basic bolt-ons don't do anything for the value of the car.

ok first off this thread is awesome. i have been reading everthing and learned a lot. now i have a question...
what if i just buy this (V6 version w/ cats) http://www.americanracingheaders.com...oSS+V8_V6.html and call it a day? when i add this do i need to perform any kind of tune? when it says 'short system' it means short tube headers right? will headers void warranty? My understanding is that short tube headers give you little to no HP gain, so why bother?
