In my area, it's Canadian Geese. Given your choices, It would have been good by mother goose. I have $1,000.00 deductable, do the math, not to mention damaging my Camaro. There are only 2 things that I would do what you did for, one is a person, the other is a moose. Anything else is fair game.

Sorry about your rims! However had you hit the bird with the car it could have been worse! For you others saying screw it hit the bird would you really want to hit this thing head on? With the plastic bumper (or whatever it is made of) being flimsy as it is it would tear it up for sure!
So would you want to hit this head on with YOUR camaro??

hmmmmmmmm

EDIT: Not to mention, judging by the pics, at least one of your tires needs to be replaced also
the one that i was able to get replaced was the one with a rip in it, it was the worst, and i had the whole car inspected and there was no suspension damage so now all i have to di is pay around 240-ish to get the rest of the car fixed.

It cracks me up how so many say just hit the bird .... LOL.... These things are huge, not like running over a chicken ... When they extend their necks, they come up to the roof of the car. A pelican can be just as bad, the big ones have 6'-7' wing spans ... And lets not even talk about what a gator can do to a car ... LOL...

I feel your pain.

The sandhill cranes may well be endangered.... but only because they're stupid.

The white cranes that live in my area are quite beautiful but dumb as a box of rocks. They do the same thing yours did and even though they're wild animals, they will walk right up to you so close that if you wanted to, not that I ever would, grab them by the throat.

The birds I really find distasteful are the Muskovy ducks also found in Florida. They are everywhere so I'm not sure why they are protected just like the sandhill cranes. For a duck they're really ugly and have evolved to the point where they can't even fly anymore because they're so fat and always eating and looking for handouts. So even though they're always underfoot/wheel it's a hefty fine to molest (sounds kinky) or injure one. If you are kind enough to feed them they will repay your kindness by "recycling" that food all over your property. I've heard them refered to as "rats with wings"

I live in Florida too...and I don't know what these birds are...but there ain't no way in hell I would sacrifice my $40000 car for a bird. And I would fight to the death, any fine for an unavoidable hit. I don't think there's a cop on this planet that would give a ticket for hitting a bird in lieu of causing a wreck, and if there is...then he's a d***, plain and simple. If hitting the curb was a better option than hitting the bird and possibly getting rear ended, then you made the right choice, but if you're talking about avoiding it for the fine...sorry...they'd just have to get over it.

yeah i dont think that the picture on page 2 of this thread pays the size of these bird homage. they are very large. hitting one at 40 would probably have done some serious damage to the front end of the car, excluding the bumper.

I didn't mean that question towards you about would you want to hit this head on (if you took it that way sorry) I was aiming it at the ones who were telling you screw the bird and hit it instead of the curb. I would have done the same thing if I was in your situation...I would rather have to pay to replace the wheels and tires then any body damage to the car and not to mention the claim on insurance (OUCH!) you would most likely have to file had it been body damage from hitting the bird and possibly being rear ended.

I agree it doesn't show the true size of the crane. That picture was the first one to pop up in a google search. But they average 5 foot tall I tried to find a comparison photo but no luck!

$400 ticket vs. rim repair - hindsight is 20/20 but there's a simple math comparison anyway.

Three years ago I swerved to avoid hitting a cat that was in the middle of the road, except I fishtailed and slammed into a pole on the side of the road. Got knocked out and had to spend 3 days in the hospital after that. Hospital bill plus totaled car. Not fun. Today, I wouldn't have braked or swerved, but rather floored the gas with a smile on my face.

My .02
