About 6 months ago on Speed Channel, there was a show called "History of the SS" or something very similar. They mentioned that Chevy intentionally under-rated the horsepower ratings due to insurance. There may have been other reasons given as well, but I just remember the insurance one specifically.
P.S. I think my member name gives away my position on what the "top dog" should be! |

I had a 67 RS/SS 350 (about 300HP), a 69 Sport Coupe 327 (about 210HP) and a 69 Z/28. If that 69 Z/28 had only 290HP, I'll throw myself off of the Empire State Building.

Fudging the hp numbers isn't anything new. Isn't anything old, either. I'm surprised that the Japanese gov't doesn't find it suspicious that all these high performance Japanese cars have 276 hp

More. It's a voluntary "Gentleman's Agreement" between the Japanese manufacturers so they would not appear to be putting dangerously high-powered cars on the market. However it was a known fact that these cars produced far more, some around 320. I don't know what they market the power ratings as in Japan, but it appears that the agreement isn't in place any more. It's like the agreement between German automakers to electronically reduce their cars' top speeds to 155 MPH, although that one they actually seemed to have followed. Well, most of them. Porsche doesn't.

Yes, in spite of what some of the naysayers on this forum will say. I was browsing through some things on the web the other night, don't remember which site I saw it on, but there was a quote from a Motor Trend (I think) article back from '67-'69 era where thay stated that the SS396 325HP Camaro was faster than the Z/28 in 0-60 MPH, but the Z/28 was faster (lower ET/higher trap speed) in the quarter mile. And that is completely in line with my '69 Z/28 experience "back in the day". I always got beat off the line (no matter how high I revved before dumping the clutch) and got a few car lengths behind, but third gear was my power gear, I was hitting third gear around the same time they were hitting forth (shifting at 7-8,000 RPM for the Z while the opposition had 5500rpm redlines) and I'd make up the difference and then some at that point. I had absolutely no fear of SS350 Camaros, GTOs, Boss Mustangs, etc., that solid lifter, high revving 302 could hold it's own with most anything except the most potent of big blocks (read 426 Hemi, L88, etc.). And that was just the straight line performance, I never bought the Z/28 for quarter mile performance, throw some curvy roads into the mix and the Z/28 was an even better performer. So I'm hoping if they make a new Z/28 that it will have an awesome suspension cause I really enjoy "straightening out" roads! Chevy's new engine technology coupled with a great suspension would be awesome in my opinion.

I hear you on that one. If I can buy the 09 camaro have suspension that matches the HP out the box that would be great. I hate buying, installing aftermarket suspension. although Im sure Ill end up lowering her a inch or two whenever they get those aftermarket parts rolling. |

 That sounds really far-fetched...if you don't mind me saying...I doubt GM would put the LS9 into the Camaro...that's ludicrous.
Where did you hear that? I'm just curious...

Sounds like from that magazine article....where the rumors of the top dawg supercharged LS3 would be putting out (actually, I'm pretty sure it was 550hp.) for the Z28. And...there were rumors of the SS as well.
This was just one mag article where they swore they had a GM insider sworn to secrecy. Still...all speculation. |

Any souce that claims to have been sworn to secrecy can't be all that reliable, because he broke his promise to keep quiet (which makes him suspect) or he never knew anything 'secret' and told two lies at once.
