Don't know why the pic of the dinosaur was included except maybe as proof that GM used to make a 3.8? But if you actually read his post and not just look at the pretty pictures, he's only wondering why GM doesn't have a new 3.8. It would make much more sense for GM to increase the displacement of it's current 3.6 design (provided the block can handle the increase) than to totally redesign an old engine.
Also, the only way to increase horsepower is to increase the torque at any given RPM. HP=torque*RPM/5252. Torque=force*distance. So bored (more force) or stroked (more distance), the engine would still make more of both. Now that the '11 Mustang V6 is here, GM may just increase the V6 displacement (PLEASE) to make up for the Camaro's extra weight. |

The 3.8 was introduced an an optional motor in 1996.
The current direct injected 3.6 makes 312hp (amazing for a 6) and still puts down 29 mpg. What more do you want? I think they nailed it with this motor. It really is an unprecedented mix of power and economy for a entry level car. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. ![]() Not sure about this thread... With that photo of the 3.8 up there, I sorta feel like we have this: ![]() But kinda want this back. ![]() Does that about sum this thread up?

It is a great motor though... However, a bump to 4L gets you about 350hp. Should be enough to handle the v6 mustang times. |

I have the V6....and I love it.....BUT I really do wish I have more options for mods....the REAL issue is if we have more POWER ADDERS available to us.....and IF the ECM was "broken into", like it is in the V8.....you would see a lot more guys and gals modding their power trains other than just a CAI, and an exhaust. REGARDLESS of the size our our engines. once upon a time I had a Ford, and it was a 3.0 L V6.....and FORD Performance had a Whipple SC kit that I could have had put on my truck and the engine warrentee would cover it....THATS what we need.....have the backing of GM would be paramount.

http://www.ford.co.uk/Cars/NewFocusRS Five cylinder 2.5 litre, with 305bhp. You guys make some great looking cars, but the obsession with V8s is a little anachronistic today. Any of you who have driven Beemers, or audis will attest to the fact that the hp to displacement ratios in their engines is amazing. The camaro is a heavy beast, but short of dropping some of our beloved gizmos, or using expensive aluminium panels, that's what we've got. I look forward to the new year, to pose with my fat V6 Camaro, next to our lads in lightweight whizz bombs.

Kinda doubt it as in '93 the v6 was a 3.4 and made a massive 160 horsepower.
