All evidence I've read says that most cars are governed because of tire ratings. Go past the tires speed rating and they begin wearing excessively quick. So I've heard.

I did hear once that some crazy Mercedes car got airborne on the 24 hours of Le Mans or the 'ring back in the 90's. But of course this car was going about 240 mph at the time. And had way too much lift. Supposedly the driver was headed down a straight, the car turned upside down and landed that way in a tree-top. He lived with minor injuries. Read that in Car and Driver a while back.

I wouldn't drive it that fast unless at the Dragstrip! But on a 1/4 mile you wouldn't reach that speed anyway. But at least you can say you got 600+ H/p and tq tho right...

That was in the 1950's at Lemans can't remember the exact year, but it was a Gullwing, fifty people in the audience died. Sweden outlawed car racing because of that crash as well as Mercedes cancelling all car racing programs, Mercedes only just started racing again a few years ago.
However you may be referring to a series of crashes on the Losannes (spelling) straight over a rise about midway through. Those crashes don't happen anymore due to leveling the hill and adding a chicane to the middle of the straight.

Without considering drag co-efficient, parts breaking or computer limiting...the speed in top gear @ redline 6600rpm for the SS with 6sp man is 276 mph

Cool Things I need to do

OK,

So I want to experience my new Camaro SS's maximum capabilities, and I can't reach top speed in the brackets at my local track. Then I need to modify the ecu, get z rated tires, go to performance driving school, and head for the salt flats (not willing to try this on I-10). Do you think I should give the engine a break in period first? Any other modifications? Any place closer to Indiana than the salt flats?

1) yes. It will also give you time to get a feel for the car

2) I don't know

3) Indy Motor Speedway

so does anyone know what the speedometer will read up to on the SS? I know the GTO goes up to 200 with a similiar engine. I know this doesent represent the top speed but to me its still eye candy.

From what I've seen and read, the V6 has a speedometer of 160mph, and the V8's speedometer is 180mph. If I remember correctly, the LS and LT will be electronically limited to 115 mph, and the V6 with the RS package will be limited at 155mph. I haven't heard for sure where the SS's will be limited at. But since the speedometer comes in at 20mph over the V6's, 170-175mph isn't a bad guess.

Dude, 6 gear is geared like that for fuel economy to avoid a gas guzzler tax, No way in hell the camaro can go faster than a Bugatti Veyron.

Just curious, not being mean, as I too am going to tune out the speed limiter.
The fastest I have ever taken/gottem my 06 vette (lightly modded 06 LS2 Corvette same power as the LS3) was 158 MPH in 5th gear done on the front straight at Road America, I don't think there is a longer piece of race track in America (longer than the straights at Daytona/Indy)

So if any one thinks they will get a 2010 Camaro past 160 in real life is dreaming. Anything above that is for magazine racing and bragging rights.

Let's get real. BTW the Midwest F-Body Association sponsors 2 two day HSDE at RA each year. For $350 (and a helmet) you can track your car (in an UNLIMITED and SAFE enviroment): Of course there is always the HERO who thinks he's Jeff Gordon and buys the farm:

But if you really want to test your limits (and the cars) let's see you there next April.

Sure it can. All you need to be making over 450 hp at 3600 rpm, and about 2000 at redline. Anything can go fast, just give it more power.
