WOW! What a great Friday night race that was!!
Congratulation to Team Stevenson Motorsports, Matt, Jeff, Al, Hugh and the whole crew manage a blistering 3rd place finish! What was looking to be a horrible weekend by noon on Friday became a cut throat finish to 3rd place! And what a race it was... After hitting the wall in lap 4 of the 1st practice session, it seems that the Number 6 Car would not make it to qualifications; all eyes were now on the Number 9 car driven by Al Carter and Hugh Plumb. To everyone surprise the #6 Camaro rose from the ashes and made it's way to the qualification. The team was on precarious ground and received a pit lane penalty for leaving some equipment on the track putting them back in 9th place, a great 2nd effort by Matt Bell. With the #9 Camaro taking 14th the stakes were still high for Stevenson motorsports to get a good 1-2 finish in what was once; "The Home Town on the Legendary Camaro". The start of the race was bumper to bumper action and both Camaros driven by Plumb and Bell were gaining momentum and places right up to 5th and 6th spot. The competition was fears up front with a couple of beemers and Stangs but the most exiting car was driving by the local favourites Jean-Francois Dumoulin in the Porsche Cayman from BGB Motorsports. After a couple of caution laps it was time to change drivers and although Jeff Bucknum didn’t drive the car in practices or qualification, he jumped on the loud pedal without hesitation. Both Camaros started to be at ease on this short track right up till; BOOM! the engine blew out from Carter’s #9, the white smoke covering at least 300 feet of the tracks made us realized that the night had crept in and the light show was about to start. The firing new creation from Chevrolet with its hot Brembos coming straight from Lava ashes looked awesome. Buckhum kept pace with the local favourite Dumoulin in the 83 car battling for 5th spot. For more than 10 laps the big Camaro seemed stuck behind the little Cayman, catching it on the front strait but unable to past it in the 1st corner. Dumoulin pushed by the crowd looked to be rock steady but his dream was running on empty right before getting the white flag, his Porsche with its little gas tank went to a complete stop opening the way to #6. Then with two lap to go and a 2 second gap to third place, Bucknum open the throttle of the 6.2 litre engine to catch the overrated M3, the #45 drove by Terry Borcheller. In a final attempt to fame and glory, the number 6 Camaro made its move in the last chicane and came on top to take the checked flag for 3rd position. NOW that was racing my friends!!! 2 hours of pure excitement. The best part was to get to know the Guys from Stevenson after the race, getting to sit in the number 6. I’ve like to thanks Matt and his family for their hospitality and friendship. Remember Matt; there is one more chance to grab that chequered flag. “DO IT”. Michel.
