My wife has a 2010 Acadia that has the same exact LLT motor as our Camaro... her Acadia had to have the timing chains replaced at 30,000 miles...

I work at a dealer, and the timing chain problem with this v6 is common (cts, sts, acadia, traverse, outlook, etc..), expect all our Camaros to get them, but the new chains are redesigned and shouldn't cause the same problem again.

He told me that the only other LLT's he had opened had pulled timing chains. Seems the early ones had some chains that loosened up over time. Also, he told me of a whole series of 3800's that had no cross drilling in the crank at the front and rear bearing caps. All those GM customers had a new engine in thier car ownership life.

He was not concerned about the procedure and he reassured me it was for the best. He also stated that it's far better than mucking around in the block as GM would ship a brand new engine, in a crate with oil already in it.

I plan on giving him a digital camera to snap important shots during the process. Let's see what the inside of this LLT looks like now! He expects metal shavings in the pan...

Best 2 all,

What are the symptoms we are looking for to know when to get the timing chains replaced?

just over 10,000 KMS, so that's about 6400 miles or so. I broke her in well also, just bad luck.

warrantee with non-oem parts? keep your originals!

The service manager and the mechanic told me that the warrantee would be fine, but they wanted my original air box setup back in the car for the "GM inspector" that could make a fuss about the CAI (mine is a K&N) and possibly refuse the warrantee claim. They said that if it was a GM from the performance parts division, it could have stayed on without issue. He called the K&N a "jobber" part and not usually approved by GM.

The dealership is very much on my side and this makes sense as they "want" the job and to be paid by GM for the repair. For an owner of a service bench-business such as my own, I fully understand them needing to keep their techs busy. Why would they refuse this big warrantee service and not get the job? It's not like I would pay for this repair that may be anywhere in the 10K mark! I would go legal on them if it came to it, especially since I bought the extended warrantee as well. This is obviously a dud engine that just didn't stand up for more than 10,000 KMs and should be replaced. The dealership (Royal) actually did make a small boo-boo last time I had my engine oil changed there this spring, and they put in regular oil when I had ordered synthetic. When I picked up the car then, they told me of the error and offered to re-do it right away with synthetic. I appreciated thier honesty, could not wait and told them upon next oil change in the fall. I went in early to do it, to keep all break in metal bits outta my crankcase. I guess there will be plenty of metal shavings in the bottom of my oil pan now! :[

I told them of my membership to Camaro5.com and the subject of my "Camaro buddies", information exhanged and passion for all details Camaro is well understood. I would recommend that you bring your car there, Rickray, if your original dealer was Plaza also. I have reason not to trust Plaza, but Royal Chevy in Lasalle has been awesome, capable and very clear and honest with me. Call Dominic at the service desk and mention my name if you want. They had a sweeeet 1970 Oragne RS Camaro on the lift when I was there, WOW, probably my favorite body of all!

Pretty much, code list are as follows:

• P0011
• P0014
• P0021
• P0024
• P0341
• P0346
• P0366
• P0391

Worst scenario is that they have to replace the cylinder heads add cam thrust washers and the chains.

I'm not sure on the price as they are all warranty covered, the updated chains and washers correct the issue so you shouldn't have to replace them after warranty is up

They dropped the engine today...

The LLT and Manual 6 speed has been dropped from the car, being broken down into it's simplest parts. They will confirm that the engine needs replacing and order another but only after they confirm that it's fu**ed beyond reasonable repair. It ran, keep in mind but the tick tick tick turned to tak tak tak in a few weeks. Also, only under load was it silent... easy cruising with little vacuum caused the sound. Seems like a connecting rod, not just a valve.

I was clear that I would not sit quietly if this engine was only repaired with 10000 kms/ 6400 Miles...that's just too little for a major problem. The mechanic told me it's new engine time, Mr. service desk guy says they need to confirm it before ordering a new complete engine. GM may elect to fix it only if the repair is far less than a new whole engine. Poppycock I say to that!

The mechanic will call me when he finds the problem and I will pop by to take pictures of the insides of the block... In fact, I will leave the camera for him tomorrow. He felt bad taking it today, but I don't care if this "extra" digital cam of mine gets greasy...

More soon,
eB
