And that's the truth. The camaro's advantage is not that slight here. A bad ls1 driver will lose to a good 3v driver, but that's about it. From any roll, the ls1 will pull a few cars stock vs stock.

i agree. Its not a very close race. These two cars are about as far apart as an L99 camaro is to an LS3 camaro.

Personal debate: 2011 Mustang V6 or Camaro?

Hey guys, don't let the user name fool you...

I fully intended on getting a new Camaro in the past few months but our house is still on the market and we're having to shift funds around. Once it sells, I'll be free to purchase a new car. During this time however, I've become more aware of what's become available now...

I grew up a GM guy, being in NASCAR country you were either Ford or Chevy. I had a '99 Pontiac Firebird in high school, which was a great car if you didn't mind replacing electronic items every so often.

While I still favor Chevy over Ford, Ford has really upped it's game with the new 2011 Mustangs. I test drove an automatic 2011 V6 Mustang and was surprised at the "pep" it had for a V6. This was in comparison to the V6 Camaros that I've driven which seemed heavier and not as quick.

I broke it down to several areas of comparison...

Looks: Although the Mustang isn't an ugly car, the new Camaro is just sex-on-wheels. Camaro definitely wins in this area.

Interior: I actually love the interior of the Camaro. It's unique and I like the feeling you get when you sit behind the wheel, as far as how low it sits, the look of the steering wheel & gauges, and the view of the windshield. The interior on the base model Mustang is plain-jane, but the premium model is very nice. I'll give this one to the Camaro.

Driving: The Mustang felt lighter on it's feet and quicker. If I got the Mustang though, I'd get the manual. If I got the Camaro, I'd likely opt for the automatic with the paddle shifters. Getting the V6 due to it being a daily-driver and better on gas. At the same time, wouldn't mind good performance, which is why the new Mustang is getting my attention. Point for Mustang.

Price: I can get a base V6 mustang with the optional performance package for around $24k. The RS Camaro that I'd want, I can get for around $26k (after GM supplier discount). I could get the LS or non-RS 1LT, but I would have to at least upgrade the wheels somehow. Anyways, Mustang seems to have better bang-for-the-buck. Not to mention, the Ford dealers I've run into are much easier to deal with so far than the Chevy ones. Another point for Mustang.

So with a "tie", I'm kind of at a loss right now... the old me would've never considered a Mustang (and for good reason, since they were dogs) but Ford has done a good job with the 2011 model.

What do y'all think? I'm keeping in mind that this is a Camaro forum, but would love to get some other opinions, possibly from those of you that have driven both before.

And just so you know, I have looked at and driven both the Genesis coupe and the Challenger. Neither are in contention for obvious reasons...

I have a 2SS/RS and my dad has a 07 supercharged GT mustang. The Mustang is faster and quicker (for obvious reasons) but the quality, ride, looks, fit and finish, handeling, driveabilty are superior on my Camaro. Don't get me wrong, I love driving the Mustang, and I did even when it only had 300 hp at the crank (now its 472 at the wheels) but it isnt the Camaro. Now I have heard the 2011 are far better than the 2007s so I cant REALLY compare. I have yet to drive a 2011. Either way, you cant lose. Both great cars.

Both are nice.
One is a 13.xx car
one is a 14.xx car

Both are nice- Camaro will turn more heads.
Mustang will get you there alittle faster

Whichever you get, you will be happy.

I have to agree. Which one makes you feel better when your driving it? The Mustang may be a little quicker, and handle better with the performance pack. But how you feel driving the car is what matters most.

So what's more important to you? How the car looks, or how it performs? Then the only other choice is price.

In all honesty, the Camaro excites me more to drive, yet the V6 version just seems underpowered. The novelty of it being the new Camaro makes up for that somewhat.

The Mustang I test drove accelerated great, but I felt like I was driving.... well, a Mustang. Had that "rental car" feel to it, but it was the base model. However, the premium model's interior feels almost like a different car. Opting for that would add another $2k or so to the price.

I guess I should say I'm still leaning towards the Camaro, but Ford has made it a lot more difficult to decide!

that extra 2k will make the prices equal in your case.

If only the Camaro wasn't a porker lol. But I love my "porker"! Maybe compared to the mustang track pack, the Camaro is a tad slower, but underpowered...I think not.

The camaro is a bigger, but smooth ride, and I feel like that just makes it seem slower than it really is. Take for instance, when I ride in my g/fs smaller car...I feel like I'm flying at 70 when that speed in the Camaro seems a bit slow.

But as others have said, get the one that makes you feel good! I hate to tell you to spend more money on a car that already costs more than the mustang, but a quality CAI adds some pep to these cars.

Good luck to you!

Depends on what you really want. Sound's like you dig the Camaro based on it's looks and interior which is fine. After all the exterior and interior are literally the first things a customer sees and you either like it or you don't. The Camaros design visually overall is done better then the new Mustang. But the new Mustang still looks plenty good, I just don't care for the back too much. The performance of the 2011 Mustang is what get's me interested. The 2011 Mustang V-6 with the new 3.7 is a bit quicker then the V-6 in the Camaro, but both are great cars in their own respects.

If I were you I'd wait a year and see about picking up a 2012 V-6 Camaro as it will have a new interior and I'm sure some more power on hand. Though if you want something now go with your gut and get a Camaro.

As far as options go, the premium adds a lot more than a Camaro has for the price. (leather vs. cloth, stereo, other features)

If I knew what the 2012 model was adding on, I would certainly wait. Even then, if this housing market doesn't pick up and I'm not able to make a move in the near future, waiting until next summer may very well happen.
