i think it would be close, and it would depend on how long the race was. as mentioned above, the tpi's had virtually no high end torque. they could muscle out to the front right off the line, but as the race went on they would lose that momentum. and on a road course, the '10 wud win, no question. the suspension upgrades these days are amazing.

Chances are slim to nill that a 20 year old Camaro is running like new. If it's stock, it won't be doing quite as well as it used to. On the other hand, if its not stock ...

Tell me about it man. Although I really loved the car...my first car was a 92 RS with the 305 tbi auto. The car was very clean and I loved it...but damn I was scared to race just about anything.

Mini vans would give you a run...literally.

I think that is a lot of the reasons the third gens are looked at as being slower than they were. They offered 4 different engines.

A v6 (I think 3.1)that had nothing.
A v8 305 tbi that had nothing.
A V8 305 tpi that was decent with a manual tranny.
A V8 350tpi that was very respectable for its time.

My bolt on 305 tpi 91 z used to run consistent 14.6-14.7. It had SLP runners, the slp thingie that went in on the front of the throttle body, edelbrock headers and flowmaster catback. In retrospect man that sucks. However the car was used in autometer ads in 2000 and in their catalog.

Stang guys will say yes. Maro guys will say no.

In 5 speed no option notch back configuration I would say they had a .2-3 tenth advantage on average.

Besides that a drivers race.

Unless you had an auto 5.0...they had no chance. The AOD sucked back then.

I can speak from experience here. I owned a 1986 and a 1988 Mustang GT 5 speed back in the day. I never lost to an F body. It wasn't until the 1989 turbo TA that the F cars topped the Mustangs. The only other American cars back then that could beat it were Corvettes (barely), and Grand Nationals.

I remember test driving a black 1988 Formula 350. I really wanted that car. I pulled out of the dealer lot, got on the highway and pulled up to a stoplight. When it tuned green, I punched it. It felt real strong off the line. Once I hit 40 or 50 mph, it just fell flat. Ran out of breath. The cars felt deceivingly fast off the line, but just didn't have any top end. I think the 305tpi 5 speeds were actually faster.

I think the V6 Camaro would have the edge over the 91 Z/28, especially on the top end.

I had an 85 black and gold Z28 with the 305 4 barrel and I bet I could hit 150 in about 500 feet off a cliff, that car looked great and had absolutely no balls!

I wouldn't be so quick to say the 10 would win on a road course, the old IRocs and Firebirds with the WS6 suspension put numbers down that are still respectable by todays standards. AS for the 350 TPI, I don't have much experience, but have seen a 91 Z28 hitting 13.9-14.1 with just a K&N cold air setup and drag radials.
