Give yourself a few days and you wont feel the need to watch the tach to know when to shift

Absolutely my thoughts as well...................the HUD should only display information regarding engine and drive train performance or operating levels as well info pertinent to vehcile safety related isssues ( Tire Montoring/Sensor, and Braking System warnings, ie). Hence giving the driver an advance heads up to any issues with the car itself. Radio features, settings, or advertising have nothing to do with the overall driver, driving experience nor in my opinion muscle car ownership. Being interupted may actually be determental to the automobiles longevity and dangerous to its passengers.

This consideration was taken into account during my recent buying decision. With the 2011 model HUD being less than a relevent neccessity ............I couldn't see waiting and paying for less than what I would expect in terms of user friendliness or value. My .02

Okay, the OP stated a real problem and he gets idiotic responses such as "Duuuaaah look down a couple inches."

Do you think hes not aware that he can look at the tach. The point....THE WHOLE POINT of a HUD is so you dont have to look down. Its a performance car...not a friggin middle age friendly minivan. Its stupid to have the ads override the tach.

Oh and for the people saying shift by engine sound....lol. Lets go drag and Im going to cover up your tach. We can log your run and see how well you actually shifted where you wanted too.

The guy served up a legit issue and you guys comeback with "Blluddyyya theres a tach a few inches down"....really camaro5.

What did everyone do for all the years before a HUD ever existed? They had gages in the dash or they added them. To me, the HUD is not a necessity, but a luxury add-on to the vehicle. Would I like it in my 2010, sure I would.

As for driving the car by (engine) sound, I believe he was referring to every day driving. My guess is that most people who take their car to the track use the tach or have some kind of shift indicator installed. I hardly ever look at the tach in my car, but I don’t race my car either and only once have taken it to 6K RPM.

I do, however, believe that advertisements should not be showing up on the window to distract the driver. The only things that should show up should be vehicle specific information (tach, speed, tire pressure, etc). The next thing we are going to hear is “Oh, my HUD displayed an advertisement from XM and then I hit the guy in front of me”.

First of all I wouldn't use the tach on HUD as the end all of accuracy. The corvette HUD is a good indication of about a 500 - 750 rpm range. So if you are shifting at 4000 rpm and can't possibly shift at 3998 or heaven forbid that engine would over rev all the way to a blistering 4002 rpm. you would need the accuracy of the needle, not the HUD.

Personally, I agree with you, I would rather the radio not interupt the display, but there are countless people who like the idea. One guy even likes to guess the song before the display. I think that would be fun. It is what it is.

Here's a thought: Maybe if you're doing performance driving/racing where you need to be concentrating and watching the tach through the HUD at all times... TURN OFF THE RADIO.

On another note: I guess GM has to pay off us (the US gov't) some how... selling ads on your HUD is one way. -lol

You guys are making me glad I didn't hold out for the HUD... I think I'd be feeling pretty mentally violated finding out this cool device was an insiduous method of advertising.

I didn't know that people used the tach to shift, everyone I know just goes by engine note, speed, and experience. IMO, the car is so good, people are left to complain about little things.

The vehicle is a day old and was driving the gears one through six shifting at 4000 RPM when the XM station changed from programming to advertising and thats what my windshield said! Great to miss a shift for an important message from the "Hair Club for Men"

Who is the Idiot at GM that thought this up and the bigger idiot that signed off on it!

My Vette allows me to change functions apparantly the Camaro does not ... or at least the "know how" hasn't made the internet yet! Until then I better turn the radio off when shifting by the tach.

Other than that its one great car and looking forward to a good road trip soon!

You must be listening to a different XM channel than I do. I NEVER get commercials, that's the whole reason I bought XM.

But if they continue to force feed me Bruce Springsteen I will drop them.

Hi, as the OP and a guy that’s got a Vette with a HUD I guess I got use to the idea that I can program my HUD to see the tach, speed, and selected gauges. The day I got the car I was driving it to enjoy it to about 4 grand then shifting. We've got old straight and level mining roads here in Polk County and they are fun to drive. You can open your window and the only engine you hear is yours.

Then when looking at the tach, I see it shift to a stinkin commercial with an 800 number. That's plain wrong! Just liked the idea of telling GM if you’re going to put a HUD in the car make it programmable like the Vette, but I think I'm looking at the one that’s in the Park Avenue, LeSabre, XLR and STS.

I'll find the wire that does this and report what happens if I cut it. Maybe I'll check with a geek squad guy first. Oh yeah, rather than look down at my tach, I'm 6"1 and remember when we mounted tachs upside down to see them better, I'll look at my radio to see what it says.
/Ken

Theres definitely no wire you can cut to eliminate this. Everything communicates through a system bus like on a PC. If you cut anything it won't work at all.
