Scary Dyno Experience Today

Took my car to Tuner's Inc. in Jacksonville today, on the second dyno run when Tony stood on the throttle some black smoke blew out of the exhaust. Then when he let off the throttle at 6200 rpm the same black smoke blew out of the right front fender well. We noticed on the dyno that it ran out of fuel at the top, I suppose the fuel system couldn't keep up. I was afraid it was a blown piston or head gasket; but we noticed black soot on the exhaust at a lap joint where the mid pipe connects to the cat. That explained the black smoke from the wheel well.

The engine seems fine, it ran fine on the drive home. The black smoke freaked me out as I'd never seen it on 4 previous dyno runs. But then again it never ran out of fuel during those runs either.

Anyway, she put down a peak of 601rwhp / 548 rwt. The previous best was 544 / 523. So I picked up 57rwhp by changing the street version of the E-Force air box to the competition CAI and reducing the pulley from 3.5" to 3.25".

Now I just need to find a solution for the fuel system.

I'll tell you about a scary dyno expeience. My car was only on the dyno getting a fuel pressure measurment before any upgrades and I had a lifter fail and shut the whole thing down. We had to tear apart the entire engine to look for damage. Could be a blessing in disguise. We went with some major upgrades the should put the car on the doorstep of the 9's. Glad to hear you got out OK. GD luck with your car.

Get yourself and MSD BAP or some meth or both!

Yikes...a lifter collapsed? My car has a fairly large cam and Patriot Gold dual valve springs, I wonder if that problem is awaiting me?

You're targeting 9's? Wow, have you upgraded your rear end/axles?

You should be ok. I was L99 with AFM lifters. You're LS3 so no issues,as of yet, but I wouldn't expect it. The cam going in my car is really huge and I don't expect any trouble with all the new valvetrain parts.

I agree on the Fastlane dual pump. I didn't know how much he wanted to spend. Granted, its a much better way that the BAP but at 4x the cost. But if money's no object, go for the ADM/Jannetty fuel system. Again, thats like 2-2.5x the Fastlane pump but its the best out right now.

The L99 has different lifters? That's odd.

If your cam is a "blower" you'll see a substantial HP increase, somewhere in the area of 80hp. The key is to make sure the LSA is matched to the durations so the SC isn't blowing air-fuel out the exhaust. I'm sure Ted knows how to fix you up.

The L99 has Active Fuel Managment lifters. I guess they can only handle so much. PM comming your way!

Ted at Janetty has a fuel system up grade for the E-force, along with it you may need a duel pump or boost a pump.

Grinder, here you go. I didn't even realize that you had the E-force. Be VERY careful. I saw an E-force car come into Ted's shop a few months ago with a piston burnt up becasue they cylinder went lean. Here's Ted's fix.

Thanks! I'm ordering that along with the Fastlane dual fuel pump. I know the Fastlane solution is more expensive but I like the idea of a replacement pump over the BAP.

Dynoing can be scary.I ussually don't like the customera around because they can get scared easy. I've had failures with rods shooting out the bottom to dipsticks blowing out causing a fire on the headers. We stay calm and take care of the problem but the customers turn white..LOL

Cams and blowers can be touchy. Most people run Cams way too big. It's about efficiency. Most of my 900rwhp cars run small Cams. For these LS3's I would never see the need to run bigger than a mid 220 cam with the Magnachargers.
