Question about the GTO
I'm thinking about buying a 2004 GTO (manual) and buying a LS3 from one of the members of C5 how hard will it be to put it in? and how much would u think it will cost?

Not worth the $ your gonna spend, I would just look for a clean 05 / 06 with an LS2.

What's the point? Just to have an ls3? You could build the ls1 to make a hell of a lot more power for cheaper than it would be to swap in an ls3.

because there is more potential out of an ls3?
because the price of an ls2 is the same as an ls3? and the swap is pretty much straight foward. depending on what you got with the ls3 would depend on how much other stuff you would have to buy. I would look for a gto with a blown motor first. and if you can't do the swap yourself, the cost goes up A LOT.

Nothing wrong with spending money on what you want, but id almost agree, if you wanted to spend money just to do it, id be more agreeable on putting in a built original GTO BB with a 4 speed, 20in wide tubes that do not stick out the side the stock body. [street wheelies]

If you have to ask how hard an engine swap is going to be....its probably not the right job for you.

There are some awesome modded GTO's out there for far less than doing the swap you propose. If you want the performance thats the way I would go.

An issue you will have is the drive by wire TB. This can be solved with a FAST 90mm cable TB. Other than that there shouldn't be much of a problem outside of the typical wiring/wiring harness associated with any swap.

Like most said it can be done but for the money it's cheaper and easier to just mod the 5.7l or find a newer year with the 6.0l. Of course if you're buying a car with a blow motor and getting a steal on the LS3 then things are different.

You will need to swap the oil pans.
You will need to extend the Cam position sensor wiring & knock sensor wiring. You will need the Lingenfelter trigger box to use the 58x reluctor wheel with the 24x pcm. You will need a cable throttle body of some type. You will need to rig the existing MAP into the bigger LS3 intake MAP hole or get a new wiring pigtail to splice in to use the LS3 MAP Sensor and make the calibration change in HPTuners for it. |
