Technology moves forward at an alarming rate. The OnStar control module in the 2011 Camaros is different to the 2010 models.

Therefore, the app has been developed based on the latest OnStar technology. That is how things develop. Companies are proud of their new technology and want to showcase it and that is what is happening here. They want to have something that separates previous models with a step forward.

And at the end of the day, it's an app. An application for your phone. That's it. It doesn't make the 2011 Camaros faster than a 2010, more comfortable or better handling...

It simply displays things on your phone, that if you have OnStar, you can access ON YOUR PHONE via the OnStar website or via your email. That's it.

2010 model year Camaro's were created beginning in 2009, until May 2010, when the 2011 model year production started.

Look at the jump from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 4. There are a lot of things that 'don't work' on the 'old' phone that work on the new iPhone 4. My iPhone 3G phone isn't even 18 months old, but I also don't expect it to work like an iPhone 4. Technology just doesn't work that way.

Just like my 2011 Camaro 2SS/RS has HUD, it's an advancement, a change for the new model year, to offer something that wasn't there before, to showcase technology.

I hope that the 2010 guys DO actually get the functionality, so that they don't feel left out, but also realize that they were very fortunate to be the first one's with a Camaro and were able show that off for a whole year before us in 2011 crowd. That is something us 2011's won't ever be able to do.
Yeah. Maybe the next version of MS-Windows should only work on 2012 model PC's too.
Brilliant view of how organizations should treat their customer base.
Have you ever heard of backward compatibility.
The product should have been developed from the beginning to be backward compatible. It's not rocket science dude.
It's simply a phone app. that uses the telco systems to communicate back to the OnStar environment, with a command to perform a specific task.
In my mind it should be easier to enable existing subcribers than to build the app for some new tech. that's not tested in the field.
But, hey what do I know, I'm just an IT PM that was too stupid to wait for the 2011 model of a GM vehicle, with a new OnStar module, that's so different from the 2010 module it's impossible to integrate with 2010's.
Doesn't that sound kind of fishy to you?

No worky

Downloaded the andriod app and registered and my Camaro is not supported. Serial Number 36968 - too old. Can the dealer update the software in the car?

Don't feel outdated...WE are the ones who got to feel the premier of the CAMARO. WE got to experience all the looks, gawks, envy and no other year of this generation Camaro will get that. Some people have already been desensitized to the styling and so the novelty is slipping/has slipped away for all but US...the 2010 Camaros!

Nope, just sounds like you're uniformed how stuff like 'backwards compatibility' works. How about this as a plausible reason for it not being supported in Gen8 vehicles:
When Onstar was developing Gen8, they probably weren't thinking about iPhone apps at that time. That said, they didn't build in the appropriate communication or security protocols to be able to support anything like that.

At some point after Gen8 has been released, they decide that an iPhone app would be a cool novelty for some of their customer base and probably a cool marketing tool. So they dump some time and money into developing Gen9 hardware and software with the necessary communication and security protocols in mind while they concurrently work on their iPhone app.

They test it, it works good, so they decide to release it and test the waters. Hopefully it'll be a success... people with previous gen equipped vehicles start asking for it, salesmen will have success pitching it on the lots, etc. If so, they'll decide to put more money and time into it to retain their current customer base on the Onstar subscription and add more features for current and future Gen vehicles.

Gen10 might even support the next coolest gadget Apple or whoever hasn't even invented yet and Gen9ers will be SOL with respect that fancy new, yet-to-be-invented gadget because it doesn't support Flux Capacitor encryption.

But you're probably right, GM and Onstar would rather piss off their current customer base instead just for laughs.

When it comes to cars no it doesn't sound fishy. My last car was a 2007 Ford Escape and in the 2008 model of that same car they added USB ports as standard, they also made several other changes that would have been really cool to have but I bought one model year too early and dealt with it.

I find it very interesting that there are so many complaints about this one difference between the 2010 and 2011 when I seem to remember that prior to the 2011 changes being announced, this board was quite busy with all of the anticipated/rumored changes that would make the car better for 2011.

Every year there will be changes to the Camaro, this really can't be a surprise. The first year GM doesn't make changes to make the car better and provide more functionality or technology, I'm pretty sure there would be an uprising that GM isn't taking care of their customer base.

I know that this has already been said but...you 2010 owners got the onstar service for a full year and the 2011 owners only got six months. You are not paying the same price that the 2011 owners are paying for onstar. We have to start paying a full half a year before you have to pay. That's 150 bucks! For anyone to cry like I have seen some dudes on this thread makes me cringe and embarrassed for them. Cmon guys it is just an app. It is cool and I know you want it but you can't always get what you want when you want it. That is a very basic lesson that Most teenagers have already learned. Plus they have said they are working on it. So be patient, you will get it, just not right now

2011 guys - did you notice

The little strip on the home page that has life time has a second "screen" If you tap on it it gives you your recent mpg and miles, I'm assuming it's picking up one of the trip odometers, I'll check tomorrow.

You're right. It is the mileage of one of the trip odometers. Do you really think you've only gotten 8 mpg overall? It's showing that I'm only getting 11 mpg on a V6! I wonder how OnStar calculates lifetime mpg.

you guys fail to understand that this is not a change to the car, they put rear sensors a few months after production some didn't got them most did, they put HUD on the 2011's, 2010's didn't got them fine, they probaly are going to add keyless drive and or indash navigaton in the future fine, the only difference between that and the onstar app is that with onstar I am paying montly/yearly the same as you with one of the biggest features missing a feature that finally makes you feel like at least your are not paying for something that might happen and you might need.

Except you got 12 months free and I got 6 months free. So I am paying more for the ability to use the app. I will be interested to see if they release it to the 2010's prior to June of 2011.

for some reason this thread made me think of this quote... screw you on-star with your wee beady eyes!!

Stuart Mackenzie: Well, it's a well known fact, Sonny Jim, that there's a secret society of the five wealthiest people in the world, known as The Pentavirate, who run everything in the world, including the newspapers, and meet tri-annually at a secret country mansion in Colorado, known as The Meadows.
Tony Giardino: So who's in this Pentavirate?
Stuart Mackenzie: The Queen, The Vatican, The Gettys, The Rothschilds, *and* Colonel Sanders before he went tits up. Oh, I hated the Colonel with is wee *beady* eyes, and that smug look on his face. "Oh, you're gonna buy my chicken! Ohhhhh!"
Charlie Mackenzie: Dad, how can you hate "The Colonel"?
Stuart Mackenzie: Because he puts an addictive chemical in his chicken that makes ya crave it fortnightly, smartass!

This is one active thread. I missed out on this, the reverse sensor and HUD. Oh well. I'm not that bummed but if there's an upgrade of the firmware, I'll be happy.
