Remote Start - Shuts Off After Certain Amount of Time?

Hey guys,

I did some searches and couldn't find a quick answer so I wanted to put the question out there.

When using the remote start feature - does it shut back off after a certain amount of time, or by doing certain things???

My example was this morning:
1) Remote started - no prob
2) Waited a few minutes, maybe 5-6 minutes
3) Went and put a few things in the trunk (maybe this was it ?? )
4) Engine turned off after the trunk was open for about 10 seconds...

Strange - anyone else experience the remote start shutting off after a certain amount of time or doing something? Does it not just stay on all the time?

Thanks everyone!!!!

shuts off after 5 mins. I believe you can restart it 1 more time but then you would need to turn ignition on-off to reset remote start. It wont start with hood open. It will start with trunk open. You can only use remote start twice.

Remote start with keyfob or iPhone et al?

What were you using. I know that OnStar app only allows remote start twice in 24 hours. Didn't know there was that limitation with keyfob?

Didn't do a quick search in the owner's manual though, did you? It's in there.

It should shut off after 10 or 20mns idle. Idling for extended periods is not good. It times out. Built in from the factory.

The shutoff time doesn't vary after remote start, it is programmed to shut the engine down in exactly 10 minutes...............unless you open the hood or deck lid.

From the manual

Starting the Engine Using Remote Start

To start the engine using the remote start feature:

1. Press Q on the RKE transmitter.

2. Press and hold / for about two seconds. The turn signal lamps will flash to confirm the vehicle has been started. The parking lamps will turn on and remain on as long as the engine is running. The vehicle’s doors will be locked.

3. The key must be inserted and turned to ON/RUN before driving. The engine will shut off after 10 minutes unless a time extension is done or the key is inserted and turned to ON/RUN. Extending Engine Run Time For a 10 minute extension, repeat Steps 1 and 2 while the engine is still running. The remote start can only be extended once. When the remote start is extended, the second 10 minutes will start immediately. For example, if the vehicle has been running for five minutes, and 10 minutes are added, the engine will run for a total of 15 minutes. A maximum of two remote starts or remote start attempts are allowed between ignition cycles.

The vehicle’s ignition switch must be turned to ON/RUN and then back to LOCK/OFF using the key before the remote start procedure can be used again.

Shutting the Engine Off After a Remote Start
To shut off the engine:
• Press / until the parking lamps turn off.
• Turn on the hazard warning flashers.
• Insert the key and turn it to ON/RUN and then back to LOCK/OFF.

Conditions in Which Remote Start
Will Not Work
The remote start will not operate if:
• The key is in the ignition.
• The hood is not closed.
• The hazard warning flashers are on.
• There is an emission control system malfunction.
• The engine coolant temperature is too high.
• The oil pressure is low.
• Two remote vehicle starts have already been used.
• The vehicle is not in P (Park).

This is way my HHR works. You can extend another 10 minutes by re-doing anytime in the 1st 10 minutes. Only once I think.

Like he said above... its ten minutes and can only be started remotely twice before the key is turned to the on position... that resets it and can be started the same day no matter how many times...On freezing cold days, in the morning, I will let my car go through the first cycle, then start it again just before I go out to leave for work... Then again before I leave from work... Ive started my car several times in one day...

Mine stays on for 10 minutes. Yours must've just hit that 10 minute mark as you were putting stuff in the trunk.

Hello: Thought I'd pop in and ask you about your remote start. I just got my 2011 1LT/RS last week and I've been using the remote start, but can't seem to get it to extend for the second 10 minutes. Have you been able to extend the time? I push the lock button once (or twice works, too), then the remote start button. If I again push the lock button (once or twice doesn't matter) and then the remote button, it still only runs for the initial 10 minutes and then shuts off. Just curious if you've been able to make it run for 20 minutes :-)

Thanks!!!!

Am I weird for hopping in the cold car and taking off? I always take it easy on it until the engine (and the transmission) warms up. That's what I've done for 9 years without any issues, aside from about three minutes of chilly seats. I guess that's why my car and truck have heated seats.

Granted, I have no intentions of driving the Camaro in the rain, ice, or snow. So, I think she'll be grounded for a few weeks this winter.

I had an auto before I swapped and took an M6. I always figured that the auto start cut off for safety reasons. That way you wouldn't like forget about it and then waste a tank of gas. You know?
