Out in Texas all week on business and guess what car I got from Avis? A 2011 red Mustang V6! It's the premium edition with brown saddle leather. Also, it's an automatic (rental, of course).

I'm only a night into the reservation, but here are my thoughts so far:

I don't know if it's because it's been abused, but you REALLY have to mash the pedal for it to wake up and move. But when it does kick in, it's fun. I really don't feel much of a different speed-wise between it and the V6 Camaro's I've tried. Since it was an automatic, it's just floor it and go, but I like having the paddle shifters on the Camaro.

One thing I've noticed in the Mustangs is that the back end is A LOT looser than the Camaro's. Every Mustang I've driven, I'm almost fishtailing if I hit the gas on a slight turn. I can see why some reviews have it as a more "exciting" car to drive, but I'm indifferent to it.

Interior still doesn't impress me. How in the world does the Camaro get so much flack for all the "plastic" when the Mustang's interior is stuck in 2005? (with plenty of cheap plastic itself) The ambient lights are kind of neat, I guess. The center console is nice. I'm 6 foot 1, and I had the seat all the back (and reclined!) and I still felt somewhat cramped. While the Camaro is not exactly a limo, it feels more roomy.

I've grown to halfway like the back of the car. The taillights are cool and I always love a car with dual-exhaust.

Again, what's missing for me is the excitement. Is it a fun, quick, good looking car that's competitively priced? Yes. But somehow I just don't have strong feelings for it. Kind of like that cute girlfriend that has a lot going for her, but you just can't put your finger on why she just doesn't "do it" for ya. I'm sure partly it's due to being a Ford and I'm a GM guy at heart (I'm from Darlington, SC... Earnhardt country LOL).

Every time I see the new Camaro, my heart races! Thankfully I'm getting closer to making a purchase. I can't take the "teasing" anymore!

On a side note, I tried my best to get a Camaro rental, but somehow they were all out...

id love to see that race... stock vs stock i think it would be close but i think the cobra has the edge cause its lighter and that live rear axle helps it launch compared to the irs setup on the camaro and the gear ratio is a lot more aggressive than the camaros plus i know for a fact they r under rated cause my 04 mach1 was under rated by 18hp out the lot... if he has any mods like a sc pulley and exhuast a tb and mass air flow sensor with a cai and a good tune which is the first thing anyone really does than he could be pushing about 480hp at the crank easy. i watched an episode of horsepower tv the other day that had an 04 cobra on the show and all they did was swap the sc pulley and flash tune it with a diablo tuner and it was pushing 430hp... Now if you have the above mentioned mods minus the sc pulley of course and hes stock i saw blow his doors off... either way i say race em for the fun of it but find out what he has done under the hood first so your not shocked if your rolling up stock....

Dude, how did you used to own and be into Mustangs and not know that the 03/04 Cobras have IRS? It was probably 1 of the cars only downfalls at the dragstrip. That along with heat soak and a horrible 2-3 shift. Even if I havent owned a couple of Mustangs I would know that. You spend some time at the strip with a 03/04 owner and he will be cursing all three of those woes but really cursing the IRS because like the new SS the axles break on those cars with even stock power.

Yeah, V6 due to my travel schedule and overall cost (gas, insurance, etc.).

What's cool is that either car is relatively efficient but fun to drive.

13.7x in 3,700 + lb V6 Camaro with basically just intake, shorty headers and stickier tires.

Not too shabby at all....

Per my memory thats one at 13.9x, one at 13.8x, and now scrming at 13.7x

I recomend renting a Camaro for a day and then deciding. It may be hard to find one available for rental, but you can if you call around and it is worth the $100+ or so to help you make up your mind. I rented a LS last fall for 24 hours and thoroughly enjoyed the test drive, since I didn't have a salesperson hovering over me and had all the time I need to evaluate it. It rode better, was quieter than my Honda, had a sporty sounding exhaust, and was a real head turner. I was amazed at how fast I was driving on the interstate and had to keep my eye on the speedo. A friend and I took it on a less traveled section of road and made some high speed passes just to see how well it ran. A long drive is worth more than all the opinions in this thread in helping you make your decision, especially since you've already rented a 2011 Mustang.

Jeez, never figured it would cost that much to rent a V6 Camaro or Mustang for a day.

I can't wait to get my car into the 13s, bolt-ons will be purchased some time next year. Of course then I'll have to bring my dirtbike helmet if I go under 14.0.

Yes I am! I already stated in one of the threads there that I plan to attend if the day doesn't change, I happen to have that weekend off. I really wanted to go this year, but we fill out our vacation schedules at work the prior November, and I was scheduled to work, so there was no way I could have made it without calling in sick.

I better start on the mods before I'm ready to face off with Poison Ivy, gotta save up some cash.
