I've driven our implements as a kid, which had non-synchronous transmissions. Believe me, if I failed to match at the proper engine revolutions, I knew it. Those things had so much torque that you better have a seatbelt fastened or you could easily be thrown off! Scary stuff. With people being so inattentive these days, the quantity of non-synchronous transmissions on the road need to be minimized. To err is invariably human, and the person text messaging behind you is likely to be ill-prepared for you to accidentally engine and/or jake brake in the middle of the road, or to simply lock up the rear end, by mere accident. Crash, and... game over.

A lot of commercial vehicles are headed to synchronous transmissions because, well, they are robust enough to support both the load, and the occassional driver "f-up". The new International 9800i comes equipped with the Eaton FTS-20112L, which is a fully synchronous standard transmission. This is no "joke" of a setup, as that truck has just south of 1500lb*ft of torque. So, I humbly disagree that there is a necessity for anyone to know how to master a skill which will be deprecated in the future. It is a definite good-to-know, however.

Matching engine revolutions, selecting the proper gear when downshifting, and properly taking off is a challenge enough for most distracted drivers today, sadly enough. I watched a non-synchronous truck yesterday buck through eight gears while accelerating. I thought... "no thanks, I'll stick with my synchronous standard!"

Beyond implement experience, which is completely different than automotive experience, I hadn't had any experience with standard transmissions. The last time I operated an implement was well over ten years ago; all of the vehicles we had were automatics - they were fully loaded Chevrolet/GMC Trucks, Buicks, Oldsmobiles, etc. So, consequently, they had automatics. This synchronized manual transmission has taught me a lot; for one, it is very easy to modulate the clutch, when necessary, and it is very easy to match revolutions. Secondly, it is very much fun to simply move that selector. That is a feeling which I just didn't get when I test drove the vehicle with the paddle shifters. For many of us, it is simply the "feel" of the standard which makes it justifiable enough.
I'm not saying manuals aren't fun and exciting to drive, I've been driving, racing, and repairing them for almost forty years, I'm just saying that it's no that big of a deal to drive today's or even yester year's manuals. My older sister back in the early seventies used to share with me and my brother a "68 camaro rs with a 327/325 hp and a muncie 4spd. You new you were driving a manual with that. I'm also saying and speaking with the experience of having driven quite a few cars in my years that this camaro is a ball to drive expecially with tap shift.

Knowing what's around you, not following too close, knowing how to safely merge, being courteous rather than aggressive, etc.... THESE things make you a better driver.

.... Knowledge and experience makes you a better driver... not your cars transmission.

I guess most wouldn't know 'cause you haven't experienced it but those who have know what I mean.

Why does every one have to say that...."its a man's car" ?, if it was a Ferrari Convertible with a Automatic, is that a girly car no way.....
I had to hear it for 30 plus years from my friends & dad, now my dad & most of my friends drives Automatic's .SlingShot no pun intended.

OP like I /others said if you want a Manual or Auto their both grate 6speed transmissions just enjoy what you want.

The all new Convertible !, Welcome to the Fleet !

I was referring to the M6's being "girly" compared to the old standard trans ...

In another 25 years, none of this will matter much anyway. I think all cars will be autos and standards will be a thing of the past ...

Yes....they're not fun. Double clutching just sucks. But we're not talking about non synchro'd trannies here. Don't even know why you bring it up. Might as well start talking about non powered steering vs. power steering in a race cource

I actually traded in a manual Sunfire for my automatic Camaro, driving a manual has it's perks and it's fun, but it can get old when you have to drive through traffic a lot, with that being said I gotta say I enjoy driving my automatic Camaro A LOT more than my manual Sunfire.

Dang...finally a post that makes some sense. This auto vs manual thing gets way out of hand. Neither is likely to make you a better driver...but paying attention will.

This is why I bring it up... if you think being able to shift makes you more of a man, then try shifting a gearbox that requires more thought than... "rev, clutch out, let off, clutch in, shift, clutch out." That ain't rocket science.

I haven't double clutched since the 80's... you might want to try another term.

The same old unreasoned shameful sentiments, wrapped up in blanket statements
....................and it seems a greater waste of the brains potential to try and manipulate fact with fiction.

Just sitting wondering if a man or woman, whose lost their right arm while earning a honest living for themselves or their family, is thought to be less manly or womanly, or worse, considered a lazy and unskilled driver simply because they own a automatic out of neccessity of physical limitations.................just wondering.

On a side note lets not forget to honor the brave service men and woman who have served us all unselfishly with life and limb this upcoming Veterans Day.
