Canon just came out with the G12 as well. GREAT cameras.

The image sensor is the same size (APS-C) although less mpixles in the G12 vs the T1i, but that doesn't make the difference in pictures. The advantage of the T1i is the ability to use lenses with it. The G12 has accessory lenses you can add but its not the same. Size wise its a little bulky to carry in your pocket as well. So IMO if you are willing to deal with a little bulky you may as well go all the way and go SLR.

I'm a Canon shooter as well and I'm here to tell you that I feel the glass is key. L lenses can get pricey, but it is well worth it. The picture below I took with a Canon Xsi, but I spent money on this L lens: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consum..._40mm_f_4l_usm

You can get it for less other places than Canon's site. I now shoot with a Canon 7D and I love it. But if you go with a video DSLR, understand the auto focus is useless in video mode and that you need an aftermarket viewfinder for the screen to focus accurately. I use this: http://store.zacuto.com/Z-Finder.html

Also, judge pictures that are not photoshop'ed. I use photoshop and I like it. But there are people our there that are only "ok" at taking pictures, but use photoshop to make their work seem a lot better than what it is.

Here is a picture taken with the same wide angle lens, with two filters in front of the lens:

All the pictures I've posted here contain ZERO photoshop work.

I really don't care what a shot looks like straight out of the camera. I only shoot RAW. All RAW files look flat as hell out of the camera. Every shot I take goes through CS4. This way the RAW file turns out to look like what I actually saw, not a flat as hell dull picture. I don't want to sound like a ego maniac, but I know that I'm more than "ok" with a camera.

if you're getting it w/ video in mind, get the T2i...has better frame rate choices. The prices on these has just started coming down. Newegg has it for $719 (body only).

Sure.

First two pictures are the same exact picture but the dark one is full auto. Second picture is with maunal settings which I was still learning at that point. It's the reason I didn't want a point and shoot. The G10 and G11 have manual settings for a few hundred bucks more, you get a 5-25x larger sensor depending on the camera. Most of my shots are taken at dusk or night so the sensor was a must for me.

Most pictures are taken with no flash, but good luck getting as much light as the last picture and still showing the blue LED projector from my door with a point and shoot. =)

I would look at the T2i as well. It has the same sensor and video modes as the 7D at half the price. Of course, you give up some of the high speed features of the 7D, and the housing feels "cheaper", but you can't beat the price of the T2i. We have a 7D at work and we'll probably get a T2i as a secondary camera.

Actually, the Nikon D40 is a DSLR.

The G10 is a damn nice camera, but I don't think it can get a picture like this. . . very clear and crisp.

Here's one of my favorites I took.

Another yes vote from a T1i user - it's a great camera. Just add the vertical
portrait/battery grip so it's easier to hold size-wise.

It's all about the glass though - get the T1i to save some money, it's very capable.
Then spend your money on good lenses. I'm shooting with the EF-S 10-22,
EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS, and EF 70-200L f/2,8 IS USM lenses - a very nice zoom lens kit.
