Change rear diff fluid today
A few days ago, several members remarked about metal in their rear diffs after short mileage. As a caution, I had mine changed today. The report was that there was metal, but not a large amount, but that the fluid was unusually dirty, and it was good that it was changed. I trust these guys, not a dealer, and they don't steer you wrong. V6, Auto, 5,700 miles, very easily driven.

I'll be checking and possibly changing mine this weekend. I have a little over 7,000 miles.

I'm changing mine when I hit 5,000 miles.
The problem is I can't decide what fluid to go with. Seems like GM fluid and a bottle of limited slip additive may be the safest bet. |

Mine just used the synthetic called for by GM. I figure I won't wait a very long time before doing it again.

I did this at 5000miles and had metal flake in the oil also. I think that it's normal breakin. I've checked the oil again at 10000 miles and no metal flakes so all is good.

I bought Mobil 1 and also the FM. Paid the dealer to change it and watched them do it. They also showed me all the metal and crappy fluid that came out after 5700 miles. Now there is a record that it was done in case of warranty issues down the road.

Manual quotes that you should change your rear differential fluid at 1,500 miles. Recommended but not required.

All I see on page 10-5 is change at 100K under normal driving conditions. Are they serious?

Yep, same as most cars... I think that the initial low mileage change is to replace the "break-in" fluid that's put in at the factory. After that every 100K miles.

Can someone explain what is involved to change this? is there a drain plug and a fill plug or are we talking changing out a gasket?
