Parking Lot Safety Tactics

In light of my other recent thread's failure I figured I'd try and redeem myself here.

We all dread going to the super market or whatever store as we have to put our Camaro in a risky spot. Jealous a-holes, old grandmas, carefree people etc all present real danger to your car's immaculate and dent free body.

Post your tricks, techniques, tactics to keep your Camaro from receiving any damage when parking in a parking lot.

The best ones keep your car safe while not risking any type of damage, such as keying.

I'll start, my recent favorite has proved to be quite reliable. Ill dub it as follows even though I'm sure others have used it.

The Darkness Technique for Super Market Parking Lots
- Strewn with shopping carts market lots can be easily converted into a completely safe haven to park in. There are always stray carts EVERYWHERE. These are your golden tools to keep your car safe. The technique is simple. Park, acquire one or more shopping carts and use them to block off the spot(s) next to you. Be wary though, it is possible that they could be sent flying into your car. To alleviate this I recommend putting the wheels over the curb of the spot next to you. This secures them and makes it impossible to park next to you without moving the cart. People are way too lazy to move them. This technique can protect you from keying as well because people will assume some lazy person left carts in the spots near you rather than if you park like an a-hole.

I'm very picky where I'll park (I don't even have one, yet!!!)...
  • One of the four spots around a lamp post.
  • One of the two spots adjacent to a barrier or island
  • In between two very well maintained cars
  • In between two brand new cars
  • Alone in an area, with no one around me
  • The very farthest spot I can find from the store entrance without being abnoxiously far away
  • NEVER in between two trucks
  • NEVER next to a pos
  • NEVER next to a very old car (not counting classics
  • NEVER next to an "old people's car"...like Crown Vics, or Buick LeSabres, or 80s Caddys
  • NEVER double or quadruple park

The spot can be one or all of those things...but that's the guide I've come up with.

It sounds stupid...but every one of those criteria has a reason behind it. And I have yet to get a single ding in three years!! *knocks on wood* Granted, my car doesn't exactly draw attention....

I'm a firm believer that as long as I park like a normal person, no one will bother me. It's been working pretty good for me.

Buy an orange cone and keep it in your trunk, park next to the curb and put it in the spot next to you. Works for me... lol

If you MUST park next to another vehicle try to always choose a four door. The doors are much smaller and less likely to bump your car when completely open.

The Camaro looks like it's going to beat you unconscious, put you in a silly hat, invite a couple of other Camaros over to take photos of you, then e-mail them to all your friends and co-workers. Call me crazy, but I like that in a car."

  • Park away from the entrance (preferably near lot cameras)
  • Park near Islands (as close as possible without curb rashing your wheels)
  • Try not to draw attention to yourself: avoid parking over lines
  • Shop at off peak hours (shop @ 24 supermarkets)
  • Wait in car a few moments... (caught a few a**holes circling the car this way)
  • When forced to park near other cars, jot down their license plate, approximate year, make, model and color of neighboring vehicles.
  • Have a game plan when shopping... rush in, rush out.
  • Observe other shoppers and vehicles... find a single occupant vehicle that may be parked longer than you to park next to
  • Back in if you have a vanity plate
  • When parking in grass lots directed by event staff; open doors before the next vehicle is guided to park next to you

let it be known in the town/city that you live in that you are a crazy mother trucker and that you have an obsession with your vehicle, and that you have severly injured people for messing with your car.

works for me so far.

Put them on when you get out of the car and take them off before you leave.
I can see someone trying to steal those door defenders and wreaking havoc on your doors doing A LOT of damage trying to get them off.
