Which base or post? We were stationed at Elmendorf for 3 years. Absolutely gorgeous state. I love the Anchorage area, but Fairbanks is just too damn cold. I don't envy the folks stationed around Fairbanks at all

Grats on the car and good luck with the start of your second career. Thanks for serving.

Anyway im picking up a 2011 Camaro 1SS 6spd with the RS package All yellow with black accents (stripes) Boston Acoutics sound and autostart...

My wife told me this is the most ridiculous idea I have had seeing as its a 400+hp RWD car...in Alaska...

but anyway once i get it ill be sure to get some pictures...

First off Jimi Thanks for all you have done for this Country by ways of your Military Service!!!!.....Second Drive it like you Stole....You earned it man

Everyone else i thank you for the warm welcome.

The Alaska summers are nice (from what ive heard) seeing i was deployed for 2 out of the 3 ive been stationed here. Last summer was rainy i think i only put about 4000miles on my bike.

but i plan on moving back to the DC metro area when i get out hopefully right around summer time!

FYI: unless you Are medically retired at a higher rank with enough TIS, don't plan on banking on a lot of cash flow. Trust me, you will have to supplement your income. Once BAH & BAQ are gone, it is a significant change. I wish you luck. I retired last March and bought my 2010 as my retirement present. We do only live once. For anyone that has deployed, we really can relate to the saying.

Rear wheel drive in Anchorage is not that bad. There is a guy with a synergy green SS that drives his year round. Saw him this week. My pickup is rear wheel drive and doesn't have traction control. My brother drives his 04 gto year round as well. Just avoid hills and remember that momentum is your friend. Putting in some weight helps a lot.

Last summer was an odd one. Usually it isn't so rainy.

Thanks for serving as well!
The OP stated he was going back to school and using the Post 9/11 GI bill. If he goes to school more than half-time (7 credits or more) he gets a full E-5 +dependent BAH rate monthly. In central Alaska this amount is $1821.00 tax free a month.(amount varies across the country). If he served his full enlistment, he is entitled 36 months worth of benefits. The college tuition is paid directly to the school by the VA at the beginning of the term.

To the OP, thanks for serving! FYI, the post 9/11 GI bill has been amended for 2011.
Starting in August, you will need to be enrolled as a full time student to receive the 100% BAH rate (12 credit hours/semester). If you go to school between 7-11 credits, you'll receive approx. 75% of the BAH rate.

On the plus side, if you take two classes (3 credits each) you will receive 50% of the BAH rate.

On the bummer side, the VA will no longer be paying the BAH allowance in between semester breaks or during summer breaks...ie you will only be paid when attending school.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the process and good luck!

I guess you could bring your car to alaska and have it installed LOL
I envy you. It gets cold here in the mountains in the morning and my manual doesn't have autostart :(

I've read all about the P911 Gibill I will be going full time and plan on working the winter break/spring break I've been in abou 8 years and i'm getting medically retired (mabye) either way due to my sleep apnea i got diagnosed with during the MEB process i will be receiving at least 50% at the bare minimum for my VA but again thats not including everything else wrong with me...to include the 5 ACL surgeries i've had = ) .. I believe i will be alright. If not there is always KBR , Haliburton and LSI to work for, for a year and come home and pay everything off = )
