Brakes already?

I have a 2LT with 20k miles in as many months. I already need brakes! I thought I've been babying it. Do these cars eat brakes?

You mean pads? It is a heavy car. Guess 20k for brake pads is not that bad.

Auto or manual? Auto drivers usual go through pads quicker

20k for a set of pads is ridiculous. Pads should last 100k - 150k. Friend of mine has a Yukon XL and he just changed his pads at ~130k

Mine is needing them too. And mine has 20,100. They make a noise sometimes.

That is....unusual. And it's an unrealistic expectation for performance pads like those found on the Camaro.

How are you guys determining you need to pads?

Unless they SCREECH!!! on every application of the brakes...you should still be okay.

If you haven't already, make sure to visually inspect the pads to see if they're skinnier than the "noisemakers" (the thin metal clips that touch the rotors when the pads need replacing, for anyone that didn't know).

I'm at 21K and no where near in need of pads. I'd guess it'll be 60k to 70K before mine needs them.

Apples to oranges but the front brake (pads) on my HHR SS only lasted 18k!

There is a TSB for the 2010 camaros on screeching brake pads. The fix for it was installing the new "roller skate" calipers. If the screeching isn't there every time you use the brake than it's not the squealers making the noise. I would maybe take it in and tell them what's going on. My bet is that they will come back and tell you their was/is a TSB for this problem.

I understand that 130K is a lot for performance pads, and that comparing them to regular pads is apples to oranges. I guess I'm just really confused how they have burned through brake pads in 20K ish miles.

Performance pads squeal. Ask any Ferrari......but this is a mass-market car, and so they've come up with a solution to change the resonance of the brake caliper to eliminate the complaint. Head to the dealer....either way you're going to get new pads...but 20k miles seems far too soon for them to be worn down.

I am, too. That's real low.

EDIT......I just realized something. The OP is from Sacramento...I've never been there, are there lots of hills?

i have seen both ends of the brake spectrum, wifes youkon got its first set of brakes at 100k, on the other hand i work for a new car dealer and have seen customers waste a set of pads in 7k. performance brakes wear faster. performance brakes make noise. just ask our customers with "brembos".

I would ask, what evidence is there that you do need new pads? I have noticed a few times, after first getting in the car, if it has been raining, or the brakes are wet, I hear a slight sqeal or two, but it disappears after the first stop or two. I also heard the same type of squeal last evening, when it was really really cold, but i surmise that there might have been some salt crystals that found their way onto the rotors, and that was causing the noise. That also stopped after applying the brakes a time or two as well.
