Can someone teach me about cams?
Can anyone tell me what options I have for putting a cam in my l99. I have no clue what needs to be replaced or if heads need to be replaced. Just tell me like if you were writing putting cam in a l99 for dummies

i believe for a l99 you are going to need to converter it into a ls3. its going to be pricey. best thing to do is buy a cam kit and you will need a tune with a decent cam.
how much are u wiling to spend? |

If you only want to spend 2100 then you will not be removing heads... so you must get a VVT cam... Check w/ Ted Jannetty on here or since you are in the Houston area, PM me and I can refer to a couple of great shops that will fix you up. You will have to keep it mild because a torque converter will be a grand w/ install and that would bust your budget...

The L99 has VVT variable valve timing and special lifters that go with it. To remove VVT you have to remove the lifters (they are the weak point on the L99 anyway) This requires pulling the heads which is why your estimates have been high... normally 3,500.
You can get a VVT friendly cam and keep your lifters so the heads don't have to be removed. These cams have lobes that are easy on the lifters. There are also some advantages that come with VVT. |

The funny L99 lifters are for AFM not VVT. If you don't change the lifters you must use an AFM cam.
VVT good! AFM bad!

For your budget you may want to just go with some bolt on's and a tune for now. I'm talking about Headers, CIA, Exhaust & tune ... This will be in your price range and will make a big time difference in your car.

If you don't have headers, Cold Air.... the cam isn't gonna do much for ya.... It will give you more HP and the lope..... but you have to move air and exhaust with less restriction.... so consider these first and then the cam and if you don't have that already.

Please Please Please read some posts about what VVT does & how we can use it to improve performance at just about every rpm before converting to a LS-3 setup.
We offer AFM/VVT friendly camshafts that will not require the removal of the AFM lifters for guys not wanting to pull the cylinder heads off. The smaller of the Texas Speed AFM & VVT friendly camshafts is the AFM-1 camshaft. It has been installed several times with stock converters! The AFM-2 is a little bit larger, but may require a little bit more stall (possibly a restalled stock converter) Checkout this dyno sheet: The AFM series of camshafts uses a AFM friendly lobe to help keep the AFM lifters happy. As with all of Texas Speed's VVT camshafts we will provide a camshaft phaser tune table to help get the camshaft properly tuned in at each rpm!

around 4g's is a decent price. not great, but not bad either.
what do you already have done to your car? and what exactly are your goals... do you want to run a certain ET or have a certain amount of hp?
