Sounds like its more of an isolated problem for the Black paint. I keep hearing that it shows dirt and scratches easy. I have a SIM, and I dont have and visible scratches due to ice. And I live in Michigan, so it gets iced at least once a week. Maybe the metallic paint jobs just dont show damage as easy.
I'm actually considering a black 2SS/RS..... maybe I'll just stick with my good ol' SIM.

I have a fender to repair when I get back from deployment so I may incorporate a full wetsand and high grade clear coat to avoid things like this. Sorry to hear about it...

Itll be fine for a few years but the clear coat is obviously not capable of holding up. Id rather get a new paint job with a much stronger clear that will probably even look better. |

Sorry to hear that! Winter is bad on any vehicle. With all the salt and sand hitting your Camaro you are bound to get scratches, nicks, and chips. And it makes sense that if you have any sediment on your car with ice on top of it, as it melts or recedes it will pull that dirt and sand along the paint of your car. Just like how the receding continental glaciers created the great lakes, rivers, and valleys. Just move to Texas, that's what I did!!

Just out of curiosity, If all the scratches are light, why not just have a new layer of clearcoat added? It should be easier and cheaper than a full paint job, since all you'r doing is a quick clean and prep followed by the clear. That way you get rid of the ice scratches while also adding extra protection at the same time.
Or is it still just as much prep as a full paint job? Just a thought. |

I feel your pain. My garage was taken over by a daughter that moved back in with her husband and my grand daughter so now its filled with their stuff. This means the car sits outside. I still drive it everyday except on snowy days but I also have noticed more scratches on it than should be.
Also the rock chipping is starting to get out of control and I only have 11000 miles on it.

Guessing you didn't put a coat of wax on before winter started? You could always do what I do. Volunteer firefighter, once a week I pull her into one of our bays and wash her nice and good. Then a fresh coat of wax once a month. We have a water line, electric and drainage. Plus its 70 degrees.

There's no way I'd spend $5k or more on a high quality repaint of a car that spends its life outside. The slicker the paint, the more it is going to show scratches and chips and you're going to be really angry after the first rock or door damages the new paint. I'd just enjoy the car and after a few years have it repainted if you decide to keep it. If do paint the car, I'd take a lot of pictures before and during the process to prove you aren't trying to hide anything. Most people, including dealers are going to be suspicious of a complete repaint of a new car.
