Question about tap shifting when trans in 'D' mode.

218 miles on my new Camaro... so this may be a n00b question.

I have found that if I accidentally hit a tap shift button on the steering wheel, while the transmission is in 'D' the transmission will jump into manual mode.
After this occurs - which can be unsettling because its unexpected - I can use the tap shift buttons to change gears. To get it back into 'D' mode, I have to move the transmission lever into "M", then back into "D" and the trans went back into auto mode.

Is this normal?

you can also just hold down the tapshift button and it will go back to S mode

You have that backwards. If you put the gear shift into "M" you can use the tap shift buttons on the steering wheel to Manually shift gears. If the gear shift is in "D" then pressing either of the tap shift buttons on the steering wheel will do nothing.

(At least, that's the way it's supposed to work )

The 2011's can use tapshift in "D" as well as "M" if you don't shift with the buttons after a few it will return to auto mod own it's own.

Doesn't work for me, but I'm in a 2010...

OP- bumping a 'paddle' should yield NO RESULT if you are in "D".

If you want to drive in "S" mode rather than "M", all you need to do is pop the shifter up to "D" and back down to the "M" slot. This will actually put you into "S" mode- sport mode, not manual mode. Once the car is in "S" mode, all it takes to go into manual mode is to shift up or down using the paddles.

Confused yet? Just experiment at low speeds. The car won't let you make any unsafe shifts, so just play around with it.

Ok. The behavior is confirmed to be normal.... But it is unexpected, no?
I was doing a u-turn and smacked a tap shift button (down) and the damn
thing went into a gear and stayed there. When I accelerated I thought the car was
going to explode. Scared the octane out of me.

I didn't know 2011s would do that. I really wouldn't want paddle shifting in D mode. Too much opportunity to accidentally hit the paddles as happened in this case.

I would like it. I'm always down-shifting when coming down hills then shifting M-D-M to get back into "Sport" mode so I don't have to remember to shift
