Base Interior - My thoughts - Camaro5 Chevy Camaro Forum / Camaro ZL1, SS and V6 Forums

Got a chance to look at the base interior (cloth) in person at the Dallas auto show.

I'm pretty picky when it comes to interior so take this as a grain of salt.
Personally I think it feels cheap, and the area where the gauges would go just looks so empty. It doesn't have the same class as the 2LT or 2SS interiors.
The trim looks pretty bare and boring. It just does not feel like a "21st century" type car. The main thing that really bugged me is the shift knob.

I just wanted to get my thoughts out there for anyone that has not been able to see it in person yet and is on the fence between going leather or cloth.
The small things just make the interior look way different.

The first time I felt the shift knob iin the 1LT it bugged me as well. But days later I checked it out again and is fine. It felt a little rough to the touch the first time. I guess a little wear softened it up.

Keep in mind, it wasn't really meant to look like a 21st century car. There are a lot retro cues. And for usability, I do like not having the quad gage package in Number 3. Good storage, place to keep your phone or ipod handy. But the gage pack does make it look more finished, though.

And for not being skin over foam on the I/P, this is reasonably good material. It just isn't "soft" to the touch like you would find in other cars. There are only 3 main differences in the new Mustang interior. 1) skin over foam top pad - the rest of the interior including the doors is plastic. 2) metal plate across the I/P (better if you like that sort of thing) and 3) NAV as an option. But Nav caries very littel value for resale and residual. GM at least acknowledges here that most people would rather buy a $400 Garmin than pay $2,000 for a NAV radio that you can't take with you.

Number 3 is a 1LT. Getting the leather wheel and shift knob with the connectivity package makes a HUGE difference. But you should feel like the 2LS and 2SS are more upscale, that's what you are paying for.

I agree, the I/P is a bit plain, particularly in front of the passenger. That is where the metal on the Mustang may be giving you a feeling of being better.

I think tha ABL will help out the passenger side. When i sat in the IOM 2SS/RS with the IOM trim package, it felt amazing. Everything felt really nice. Everything felt real luxurious and expensive. And ths was with the cloth panels instead of the plastc. I think, hen you pay to go for the 2LT or 2SS, you will definitly feal a big difference in your overall impression of the car compared to a an LT, LS , or basic 1SS.
I told my brother that i wouldnt let him drive it for a year because thats what he did to me when he bought his new Mustang and he said "I dont want to drive it" and about a year ago he said that because he didnt like the Camaro much but this time he went on to say " The car is to nice, and it looks so expensive, the paint is soo nice and the two-tone leather looks sick"
COming from him, i was even shocked, up until the autoshow, he was certain that he wouldnt care for the Camaro, but after seeing the Camaro, he was even dissing the new Mustang.
I dont think he got the same feeling with the LT ther, and neither did i. We loved both the LT and 2SS from a exterior appearence, but the SS having being fully loaded, made a huge difference in the overall feeling you get from the car. The LT is definitly a nice car, but i personally would not opt for the grey, only black if i was getting cloth.

It bothers me hearing the plastic isn't soft touch. That really cuts down on squeaks and rattles, and just gives a higher quality feel. Lame.

Most of the plastics are soft touch. But then again that was in the 2LT. I thought it all looked and felt very high quality. My problem was with the cloth in the door panels and dash insert. But those should be changing for the 2LT and 2SS. But even still, that's just swaping in cloth so it's still all soft touch.
