Red Jewel discontinued?

Interesting thread on GM Inside news. They're talking about the Malibu here but I wonder if the Japanese paint supply problem will affect more models.

I think there was a post somewhere about the Corvette dropping about 4 colors .. Something to do with the only pigment to add for those colors came from Japan.

Doesn't suprise me. Ford has both red and black on constraint. If pigments and other materials come from that area there will be supply problems.

Sounds like the problem is "Xirallic" a proprietary paint component that Ford and Chrysler also use, that is produced only by a Japanese company.

I guess there will be a scramble to find a replacement substance, or we'll be seeing less red and black in 2012.

Where does Red Jewel rank sales wise compared to the other colors? I can't imagine given the response by a lot of people on this forum that this color will be sorely missed. Synegy Green should replace it as a regular production color IMO.

That would figure, just ordered my RJT. The color I wanted most was ABM but they took care of that a while ago.

you'll love your rjt , hands down the nicest color. Black looks like it's on it's way out from what i heard; could be wrong tho. Cool by me if there rid us of rjt. We'll be special lol

Hard to believe with today's technology... Home Depot can match any color, why can't GM? Can no-one in the USA recreate Japanese pigments?

That would be fine by me, as long as I get mine before they do it.

It's on constraint for greater than four weeks as of this morning.

Well - you are right in that Home Depot can match paints that you paint your home with...........

..........but when was the last time anyone painted their walls or their house RJT??? -- or, for that matter, high solids waterborne automotive paint?

Home Depot could not match it..........

Important to understand that the auto industry does not make its own paints....rather, the paint is produced by PPG, DuPont, and BASF.......and you can believe that they are working on solutions to this........BUT........you can't just 'reformulate' paint.........paint has to go thru years of durability testing and validation prior to it being applied to car and truck bodies.........

I was thinking pretty much the same thing. It does seem a bit strange that from the whole of the rest of the world, GM can't get a decent black or maroon pigment.

black will never be on its way out. For every car made white and black will always be an option.

Could be wrong?? LMAO You are dead wrong. Not having black for a Camaro would be like not having blue in the American flag. Good one though.
