Wet Sand and 2 Shots

......of clear (that is)....

Met a guy at a car GTG last night that had an IOM. Showed me his painted pearl stripes and told me he had his car wet sanded to get the "orange peel out of the crappy GM paint job" and then shot it with 2 coats of clear.

Thought this was a great idea to maybe protect the wimpy paint...... thoughts???

I wouldn't wet sand a camaro. Ive seen videos of Junkman and I would maybe feel comfortable if I had a paint thickness gauge.

You really have to know what you're doing. You need a PTG too. And they're expensive as hell.

The paint is thin and chips far too easily but it would cost an arm and a leg to repaint/clear the whole thing.

Thats what I had done too. Wet sanded the whole car, painted on the stripes, cleared, then sanded again and buffed. Makes my black paint look smooth as glass.

I don't understand why there is a need to wet-sand a brand new car?

People want to get rid of the Orange peel effect that is common in mass produced vehicles.
Some colors hide it well but most do not.

I had my car completely repainted after I got it. Plus had the stripes/side stripes/gills etc...

The car was also color sanded as well and 3m clear bra. Well worth the money.

not intending on jacking the thread...

but does a respray (even that of a different color) really lower the resale price?

i wanted to spray my car hot hues "underground" but i was told it will lower the resale value...not that i plan on ever selling my car but just for future reference lol

No matter the thickness, clear will chip if it gets hit hard enough with a stone @60 mph. And if it's real thick...you'll notice it more than the factory paint.

I advise spending a fraction of the amount of money you'd have to spend on this endeavor on a clear bra package for all the sensitive areas of the car.

This is why you'd want to do that. Doesn't even look like the same car when you're done.

It could lower the value of a car. The need to repaint a car has something to do with body damage in the minds of most people. Paint hides and conceals the repaired damage.
Custom paint OTH, may also devalue the car. Custom is a personal choice and when you sell that means you need to find a buyer who also likes your artistic interpretation of "custom". That limits your potential customer base.
