the fin is different application, it's for onstar and XM... not the standard AM-FM that is located in the grid on the rear window at the top...

So if I don't want onstar or XM, I can tear the fin off and lose nothing else?

I can understand why you wouldn't want the rear window defroster. It's just that GM isn't going to put a different rear window in the back of your car so you're gonna have to live with it unless you can find a company that makes a replacement rear window that doesn't have this feature. As far as the sharkfin, if you want to fill some holes you can sure rip it off.

Besides with it you can de-Ice and Defog the rear window. something very helpful... Where have you been for the last 20 years... most cars out there this is standard on now...
most cars it is standard. there was a thread a month or so ago about a guys gf bought a new car and didnt check the rear defroster box as she thought it was standard. first winter hit, and she was driving to work and the rear window shattered when she hit a bump. now the car was a ford, so that might have had a part to play...

I live in the Miami / Ft lauderdale area and use it especially the winter , it just depends how early you drive the car. At 5:30 in the morning all the windows in any of my cars are really fogged over. Now in the other 3 seasons you generally don't need them. If you use you car after 7 or so you don't need them. I used to just hose of the car with water in the mornings but that's time consuming plus the fogging may come back as you drive. Also this car has a relatively small rear window and the rear columns don't help your rear view so you will be glad you have them.

You'd probably have to have the entire rear window replaced, and then deal with the wiring...I wouldn't want to get into that on a brand new car...

I'll be tinting my rear window .... thus won't be able to see the line as easy, and I'll most likely be removing the fuse or something so don't accidentally turn it on... seeing as how this car will be Garaged and driven for pleasure. I have a truck for daily driving.

I see where you are coming from on this...

You shouldn't need to pull the fuse . All the ones I've had turn off automatically. I also believe that in NY they are required, and probably the same elsewhere.

He's pulling the fuse so he doesn't screw up his tint.

Although, I do believe there is tint out there that the defroster will not affect.

Several of my cars have tinted rear windows and living in NY I use the rear defogger in winter (for ice snow, etc.) and summer for damp/dew. Never had an issue with tint and rear window defogger/defroster.
