How to convince my dad syntetic oil is better then conventional
My dad stands by castrol. (The white bottle). He wont ever use anything else in his 99 T/A. I use it to because if i don't his gets crazy. one time i brought mobil 1 home and the first thing he said was Get that crap outta my house and go get castrol. lol. I try to tell him the syntetic is better but he said he don't *believe in that* I guess because he used it in all his old built up muscle cars? i don't know

If you change your oil fairly frequently, I can see his point that it could be a waste of money. You could change it more often, for less money, and know you've got a clean engine. If you are the type that goes longer than the 3000 miles between oil changes then synthetic is a safer bet as it doesn't break down as quickly. In the 5th gen SS, the synthetic is recommended, so I would stay with it. I'm sure his point is that he doesn't care if it's better. If you change your oil as often as you should, the castrol is as good as you really need, and you aren't going to pay a lot for it.

Is mobil1 full synthetic? Dino oil does a fine job of doing what oil is supposed to do, lubricate moving metal.
How many miles on his 99? Does it use any oil?

In this segment they mostly focus on how reducing friction improves performance, but it will obviously also increase longevity and fuel economy.

I can send pics of 2 motors disasembled.....one run w/conventional and one with syn......unreal difference not only in the wear (still see gactory crosshatch marks from the original hone after 150,000 miles and zero wear ridge. Crank & cam journals still look like new. The non syn has a wear ridge, wear in all bearings (not much, but stil noticeable) and the syn engine looks like new w/almost NO deposits or discoloration and the conventional has sludge everywhere....hands down, no comparison.

There is no fully synthetic "synthetic" motor oil anymore. Most "synthetics" are a hybrid. If you'd like me to explain, just say so but for now:
That's not to say that Mobil 1 isn't currently one of the industry's best motor oils. The reason your father may be hesitant to go back to "synthetics" is because back in the day, fully synthetics would dissolve the particles and gunk formed by the degradation of traditional motor oil. This lead to the to claims that synthetic oils would cause your engine to leak when it was quite the opposite. The synthetic oils would actually clean your engine. The resulting leaks occurred because the engines didn't have the traditional oil gunk sealing the engine, so to speak. Engines have improved greatly over the resulting decades, as have motor oils. All standard motor oils will get well beyond 3000 miles. Hell most synthetics test at over 30,000 miles between changes. However, motor oil companies are legally barred from advertising anything over 15,000 miles. The reason is safety. The government wants you to have you car checked by a professional. Ever wonder why when you change your oil yourself you can be done inside 15-20 minutes but take it to a shop or even a quick lube place it takes almost a half hour, its because the technicians are checking other parts of your car. The so-call "courtesy [insert number here] point check." But back on topic, synthetics are the way to go. They truly do keep your engine in better condition and provide better protection from wear and tear. Engine tests have been done on junkyard engines that have been run on traditional motor oil and then drained and run on one cycle of synthetic oil and then torn apart at the conclusion of the test. The engines components were all then sent back to the manufacturer to check their integrity. All but one piece was rated as "brand new". I do not remember the piece that was rated as "used" but it was an insignificant piece. It was not a major component. |

Aren't most oils syntactic? Syntetic oils are indeed very rare.

![]() Commercial trucking still uses dinosaur guts, I'm going 30,000 mi. between changes with a filter change at 15,000. (that's with 40 qt pan) This motor has 471,102 miles and MAY use 1/2 gallon in 30,000 miles. The newer motors and their designers deserve a lot of credit in this regard.

Motor w/convetional at 130 k. I'm looking for the close-ups:
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And the same type LS that used M1 always: ![]() I'll get more pics when I can find them. On the OTR trucker, yes, we still use Rottella T but for the added expense, the synthetic expect to go over 1 mill miles easy w/out a major. Same in the trans & diffs. |
