synchros can handle it,just make sure you completely disengage the clutch when making the downshift!

First, the power of the double overhead cam comes on strong at 2,500 to 3,000 rpm. So when down shifting you want the gear that puts you in this power band.

Second, when dropping down more than 1 gear, rev the engine a bit while having the clutch in; just a quick tap on the gas pedal.

Third, 1st gear is really low, so don't downshift to first. The good news is that it's easy to do a burnout.

I do that all the time when passing some slowpoke on the highway. Reminds me of "Ludicrous Speed" from "Spaceballs."

This is a pretty good rule of thumb for the highway... pretty much how I think about it too. Kicking it down to 3rd is so much fun!

It's also a gr8 way to get a ticket. When you grab 3rd at 65mph and pass a car, you're doing close to 100mph when you're fully around if you put your foot all the way in it.

Don't ask me how I know...

In my opinion, you should wait before trying that move. Hitting first by "mistake" is not something you want to do.

what I did was start in first gear and see how fast it would go before getting too close to the redline, then I shifted to second and did it again.. first gear took me (roughly) from zero to 40 mph. Then 2nd took me (roughly) from 40 to 75 mph. So, now I can check my speed and shift accordingly. This is for the slower speeds, of course. On the highways 3rd gear is your best friend.

my favorite shift is on a two lane road when behind a slow poke doing around 50 and I downshift to 2nd. Bliss

OP, it wont take long for you to learn what gear is appropriate for the speed you are going... and for what you want to do.... Wanna ease around someone in a safe passing zone, go for 5th... want to hurry around someone, go for 4th, and want to suck their headlights out as you go by, go for 3rd...
Off topic... but I shifted from 6th to 2nd instead of 4th, at 60 mpg. I shit the bed. O_O

Overall, the feel will come. All in time... all in time.

I only downshift if I'd have to stop to avoid hitting something. Brakes are cheap, let everything else rest :]
