Don't own a Camaro (yet). But my take is that people who wish that the Camaro was built in the US do so not out of disrespect for Canada, nor out of lack of appreciation for the quality of the Oshawa build plants (number in NA for how many years in a row?), moreso that the Camaro is an Iconic Car that reminds people of simpler (better depends on how you view things) times when American manufacturing was number one in the world. IMO, there is nothing wrong with wishing that an icon was still built here, but as has been posted ad nauseum, in a global economy, things get built where they get built.

And for the record, I am far more concerned at the lack of clothes, electronics, furniture etc. that is domestically produced.

I think it is great that it is made in Canada. For those of us that live in Border states, going to Canada is no big deal. It's like me driving to Ohio or Indiana.

So they have the metric system there, and have the maple leaf flag flying instead of the stars and stripes. Most everyone speaks english, and as far as I can tell the Canadians are just as passionate about the Camaro's past and present as anyone from the US.

I also like to point out that Canada is still "America" to the rest of the world. So if it bothers you that "American Muscle" is built in Canada. It is technically still American Muscle.

Thanks Mike Judge and the rest of the Oshawa team for building such a great car. Keep up the good work.

I was more surprised by the Mexican motor and the French transmission than the fact that it was assembled in Canada. I had an HHR in the past. It didn't make sense to me that they shipped all the parts to Mexico and had Mexicans assemble them and then sent them back to the US and other places around the world. Just from a logistics standpoint, it seems like it would be financially smarter to have just built them here instead of paying to ship parts around the world and paying tariffs on bringing them back into the country. I know that auto workers are paid a lot but it still seems it would be cheaper than all of that shipping...

As far as Camaros being built in Oshawa... Well, it is just up the road from Detroit. Yeah, I am sure there are still tariffs to be paid when importing the cars back into the US but at least shipping the parts up there would be much easier and cheaper.

Mike- let me start by saying my Canadian Built Camaro is flat out awesome. Everybody that had a hand in building my Camaro did a great job. You get no complaints from me at all. I'm proud to say the folks up north did a kick a$$ job on my car.

To the OP- we already know that the Camaro was built in Canada. My "American Made" 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 was built in Mexico, yet my wife's "Foreign Built" 2009 Honda Pilot was built in Lincoln, Alabama. Let's face it, vehicles are made all over the world, with parts coming from all over the world. I'm just proud to say that the Canadian Build Team did a great job on my Camaro!

Being 25% Canadian, and living in the only place in the US where Canada is directly south of, I have to say that it doesn’t matter if my car was built in the US or Canada. As long as it was built in North America. I also work for a company that now has 2 plants in Canada (Windsor & Brampton), but we are an American company.

Not all outsourcing is overseas. I work for an outsource company in good ‘ole Detroit. We just had a major boom in business because of the restructuring of GM & Chrysler. And not only that, believe it or not, but we are also an outsource for the Chrysler plant located in Saltillo, Mexico. Our Brampton plant is starting a job for the Oshawa plant and the plant I work for may be getting the Camaro 21” wheel job. So my job is secure because of companies outsourcing.

And this is why they are outsourcing to the company I work for because, even though we are union, we can do it cheaper.

Normally, I'd say always buy American too, but in the case of Canada, it really does not bother me. Canada is about the closest country to the US economically and culturally. They are a great trading partner for the US, and I'd be willing to bet that at least as many cars built in the US are going up to be sold in Canada than vice-versa.

If it really bothers you that much, you can take comfort in knowing that at the rate the US is depreciating its currency relative to all others, those jobs will eventually filter back to the US over time as it becomes cheaper to produce here. (Though I'm not looking forward to that, because it means my savings and salary will be worthless).

Only about 15% of the Ram trucks are built in Mexico. In 2004, they had Ram truck plants in St. Louis, MO, Warren, MI & Saltillo, MEX. They have closed the St. Louis plant and moved that production to Warren. Mexico builds mostly the export (European) Rams.

It is a little disappointing, I agree.

As for the bailout.... ford got money too, just under a different name. It falls under politics so is really not a good discussion for the boards.

I know this statement will tick a lot of Canadians off but after travelling the world and being exposed to the diplomatic/expat core for over a decade, it's a very true statement.

Have a conversation with a foreigner in a foreign land if you ever have the opportunity. They will say that they have have never been to "America" when talking about Canada. They look at you like you are from another planet when you tell them we are different. They sort of see it as Scotland and Ireland (which is in The United Kingdom). Obviously it's not true but seeing ourselves as others see us can be enlightening.

They don't say that in Holland. Canada liberated them in WW2

And we lost more servicemen per foot of beach than anyone on D-DAY.
