I must be old and lossing my sense for quality in sound. I think the BA system in my 2010 is among the best I have had from a factory upgrade - by comparison those would include:
BOSE
Lexicon
Pioneer
klipsch

The biggest weakness of the BA system is the amp. Replace it with something better, and the system sounds great. Of course, you're gonna wanna replace all the speakers if you get a better amp...

The car sounds just fine to me for a CAR ... If I want to sit and listen to music, I will do it at home with a set of 901's and AR speakers ...

They are true BA speakers, just OEM grade. They aren't the same as their aftermarket products, but they are still manufactured by BA.

The old "Bose" systems weren't made by "Bose" either, they were Clarion speakers. It isn't anything new.

Coaxal speakers in the back (total four speakers)
One speaker in the bottom of door, one at the top of the door (Drivers side)
Same on the passenger side (total four speakers)
One speaker in center of dash

FYI - The rear speakers are bi-amped. That means that the amp outputs 2 distinct signals using separate cables to each speaker. So for GM to call them 4 speakers in the rear does make sense.

One more thing to keep in mind is that the BA upgrade costs under $500. A few other car manufacturer charge around $k for a branded "premium sound" upgrade. You get what you pay for!

You're missing the point. we know there are 9 total speakers, but the 2 top door tweeters are not BA , they are Gm parts, which makes the system up of only 7 BA speakers.

Maybe it's the music or your source. If you only listen to XM or talk AM radio then yes, you won't hear a difference between your system and mine. Throw in some Rush, U2, Joe Satriani or anythings with "strings" and there will be clearly audible instruments on my system you simply won't hear on a stock BA with any clarity. When was the last time you heard a song on a BA system where you could hear the drummers stick hit the high hat or the guitarist slide his fingers across the frets? The clarity just isn't there.

Back in the late 80s I installed car stereos at a shop that carried Blaupunkt ( German for "crap") and a customer brought in a mid 80s Porsche. He wanted his stock speakers replaced with Blaupunkt 4X6" plates. I pulled the OEM plates out and stamped on the magnet was "Blaupunkt". The "aftermarket", visually identical and same manufacturer OEM, actually sounded a lot better. Enough so I was convinced at that point that OEM will always be junk.

I think the BA system is satisfactory. Puts many, many other "upgraded OEM" GM systems to shame..minus the HHR SS, I agree with you guys there.

As a musician, I totally agree. I have both Paradigm reference series speakers for serious music listening, and a 7.1 surround sound system for movies and TV (oppo bluray rules!). For me, the BA system in my 2SS is just fine given the background noise of our engine/exhaust and all the other road noise.

I use my Droid X Phone thru the USB port of my Camaro and the BA sound system is outstanding when attached to my phone. When I just play the radio I do have to crank up the volume a little to match the quality of the phone.
