Well sure you can take aftermarket parts and make any car interior look amazing! But then that will be an added cost that wouldn't have been there with the already nice interior of the ZL1.

Get the vette, no question. If it is one or the other. ( We are from Corvette Forum )
-- Side note a base 2007 C6 is about $28K and a SS/RS is 35K new. 2 is better than one fast car. That is my choice, thats what we did Just so you know I am not pulling your chain, Here is the 2007 Base C6 >>> Click Here, adding the Green 2SS this week........ I think a car rack may be in order now though,. |

I would do the ZL1 but for 1 reason and one reason alone......
It is NEW. I have such a hard time buying a USED PERFORMANCE MACHINE. I know how I drive, but I also know that just because I drive the shit out of my car, means that I take better care of my car. Is that something the previous owner did as well? You will never know unless you buy the car from a friend, then that opens up an entirely different nightmare situation. The last sports car I bought used ('04 Z06 CE) drove me crazy. Every creak, moan and groan drove me crazy. I would be blasting through the gears and hear a creak, or squeal and get out of it, turn the radio down listening for ???? I am anal about my car's and that isn't something I ever want to go through again. Now if it isn't going to be a DD and more of a play toy, then get the Z06, if it is something you are going to want to keep for a while, I'd get the ZL1. It is hard to beat the look of either car. They are both in their own class as far as styling and wow factor. Everyone isn't going to know the difference between the Z06 and a regular Corvette, but even fewer are going to know the difference between the ZL1 and "Just an SS" Camaro. You can get a 500 hp used Corvette that may have the crappy "used" warranty or remained or the factory warranty for a couple of days, or you can get the ZL1 and have 5 years /100k miles to not worry about it.

If you can get a chance to drive a ZL1 when they arrive, drive both.
Only then can you make a decision. Right now, car for car, the Z06 is the hands down choice assuming you don't need 4 seats. As far as maintenance goes, either one will be just as expensive to repair or maintain. You think ZL1 tires are gonna be cheap? My Z06 after a year has only cost me for synthetic oil changes and most other maintenance I do myself (clutch fluid, etc.). 505 HP with 3200 lbs. or 550 HP with 3900 lbs., the Z06 probably waves bye-bye.

I love my 2011 1SS but I have a feeling the added weight of those New parts on the ZL1 is gonna push it over 4,000lbs.... I'm sure it's going to be fast but another thing that worries me is what the MSRP is going to start at now that I hear HP is going to be "north of 570"...
Go for the 2012 Camaro ZL1 !!!!!!!!! |

Not to mention, when something breaks, your on your own and repairs could be costly. A warranty is a nice thing to have, especially 5 yr/100,00 miles. I would feel a lot more comfortable knowing as well that I was purchasing a brand new vehicle with no previous owners. That used Z06 is going to have some hard miles on it. All of that being said, if I were in your position and considering a purchase close to or above $50k, no Camaro would be in the running. I would probably opt for a new Grand Sport or base C6, still have a long powertrain warranty and a brand new vehicle, and then just start modding whenever I was comfortable with doing so. If I had to pick from your two options, and it wasn't to be a DD, definitely the Z06.

I was in the same situation as you last year and I went with a barley used 09 Zo6.I don't regret it one bit!It is,however,my weekend pleasure car and I would hate to daily drive it where I live as the roads are horrible and the car is very LOW!!
If you plan on tracking the Zo6 I would get an 09 or newer as the dry sump system is improved over 08 and older. It holds 10.5 quarts vs 8 quarts of oil. This prevented oil starvation under high G left turns. |
