I have the cable now. Just got it today, but I'm already done with it. I'd be more than happy to send it out to whoever needs it next. Just let me know!

Yes, you need the cable if you want to update your Metra, and/or your Axxess interface.

I jut got my kit dated 2/2011. Called Metra to review the upgrade:

Metra / AXXESS told me that the only update to the unit since original production is Celius functionality. No other glitch fix issues fixed in any patch.

Well, that's to be argued. I had, and others have had, a glitch where the temp readout on the Metra LCD doesn't match the temp readout on the HUD. It's a documented bug, and there is a page somewhere on Axxess's site that lists it as so. I'll go try to find it.
