Confused about ordering...

Hey All,

I've been lurking and reading alot about people ordering 2012's. Can someone please explain this to me? Mainly: do you negotiate a price first, and do you not pay dealer fees or what? I understand this is the way to get EXACTLY what you are looking for but are there any other benefits?

If the dealer has the 2012 pricing, you can definitely start to negotiate price. Typically, yes you will still pay dealer fees, but it just depends on how well you can make a deal, you could get out of it (I did!)

Benefits...you said it already....you will get exactly the car you want by ordering it. I also think by ordering it, you have a better chance at getting dealer invoice prices rather than trying to fight over a window sticker of a car sitting on the lot that might have dealer add-on BS that brings the price up.

Just make sure that if/when you do order, you make sure you dont get any surprises with anything being written into the contract on final sale.

Well, I guess you could make a verbal deal on anything, but usually it's in writing - especially if you are smart and want to ensure everyone is on the same page. I've only paid a $500 refundable deposit, twice I've put down nothing (although that was with a dealer who knew me).

I usually make sure things are written down such as: do not put the front license plate on the car, do not wash or detail, no dealer sticker put on or plate drilled into the car, etc.

Just negotiate your price based off of invoice and you'll be fine. Don't talk MSRP. These cars have been out for too long to pay any attention to that. Good luck!

Other dealerships may do things differently, but I was at the dealership looking for a certain car (color, etc) and they didn't have it and couldn't find any so finally the inventory manager came over and offered to just order me a 2012 since they would be coming soon. That way he could order exactly what it is I wanted. and it'd be a year newer! he said he'd sell it to me for the same price as the 2011 they had that i had been looking at/invoice. They gave me a quick estimate on my trade in to give me an idea. Nothing written down, just verbal. And they said they'd call me when it came in. I didn't have to put down a deposit or anything (but i bought my camaro there last year so maybe thats why, because im a repeat customer and they know me). He just ordered one with everything i wanted and we're gonna write everything up and make the deal once it gets here. And obviously i'm still gonna barter with them to get a better deal. Lower the price of the car, get more for the trade-in, etc. we'll see.

Agreed. However, buying a convert during summer time, expect to pay more than invoice.

All depends on your dealership. I paid invoice for mine, I've seen plenty others who are paying under that.

I don't want to thread hijack, but I had a quick question and there seems to be quite a few knowledgeable people in here! Supplier pricing is higher than invoice, right? So, if the company I work for qualifies me for supplier pricing, but my goal is around invoice, should I even mention that I qualify for supplier pricing? Like, is supplier pricing cut and dry with no room for further negotiating?

interesting question as i am in the same boat and same city as well. if you wind up working with an amicable dealer on this and they get you the dealer invoice, let me know who it is...i'll do the same.

btw, my initial reaction would be preferred pricing is a starting point, then maybe ask to take another $1k off.

What I've heard is that supplier pricing is higher than invoice, but I've also heard (unconfirmed) that supplier pricing may allow you to pass on things like doc fees and advertising fees. Anyone in the know able to confirm or refute this?

If this is the case, supplier pricing may actually be the better deal. But the bottom line is if you get your vehicle anywhere within a few hundred of invoice, you're getting a pretty darned good deal. These dealers don't make as much money off selling cars as they used to. The days of a $5K swing between MSRP and invoice are long gone. Dealers make more money off their service departments and meeting specific goals than off selling cars, so I really don't push to purchase under invoice. While I am smart with my money and place my own children first, I do want my dealership to be able to pay their bills.

Thank you both for your responses, and kiteman, if I find a good dealer, I'll definitely let you know! Before deciding to wait for the '12s, I went to Bruce Lowrie Chevrolet off of I-20, but I couldn't help but feel like they thought I was just some dumb girl (I was by myself).

Every dealer does things differently. What I would do is sign off on a price when you place the order and give a deposit. Get it in writing. That way you'll feel better and it's all taken care of when the car comes.
