I just called JL Audio tech support. The person I spoke with said the tire well/battery area was his recommended mounting spot on these cars. He said they are currently developing a StealthBox for the Camaro Convertible and they have the amp mounted in this exact spot. He said they haven't had any trouble at all with it. I'm going to try it and see what happens.

why not mount it to the bottom of the rear deck, that is where most all of the amp installs I have seen are.

Peter-
I thought you could not really do this as most of the mounts cause the amp to be upsidedown, which, from my understanding causes heat to build up?
Cheers

Nope never had a problem with JL amps mounting them upside down, they are really well made for heat dissipation no matter how you mount them.

Mounted mine on the rear deck between the 6x9 speakers and still can use the trunk for hauling food, guns, bike parts. If you decide to add a Spare Tire it my not fit with the Amp in the well...Just a thought, I'm running a spare also. My amp is mounted to a hinge for swing down adjusting if needed.

I've seen HD, XD and Alpine PDX mounted there in Camaros a number of times. If you don't actually have a tire in there (usually the case), there is a fair amount of air in there.
Depending on the impedance the amp is seeing, and how hard you run it, you could get it to shut down, yes (as could you upside down in the highest part of the trunk, being as heat rises, but again, some people do this for years with no problems and others, not so lucky), but for most people a properly fed, well built, fullrange Class D amp is efficient enough to do fine there. You usually have to get to 160-170F before an amp starts going into protection.

I installed one about a month ago by the battery. It took about 2 weeks and hell heat in Louisiana and the amp heated up and quit working. This was in a black car and let me tell you it was so hot you couldn't even touch it. If you can avoid this spot do it.

Was this a class D amp or A/B? How much power?
