But still...even with a floor jack...isn't it unstable?
I have done it. Its the same as when people raise the rear from a single point. One side might be lower by an inch at max. It's just harder to jack it up by one point. More effort that's all

I used a 12" 2x4 on top of my floor jack cradle and that helped stablize the car until I put the jack stands under it.

I normally use a piece of wood also to distribute the force and prevent marring the car. Depending on the lift point either a square piece of 1x4 or a length of 2x4... Sometimes a piece of 4x4 if I need some extra lift like on my truck.

Can you not jack up the rear end on the rear differential? I've seen 3 guys do it no problem and easily slid jack stands underneath.

If you do make sure you use a block of wood. It's not recommended though. That point is not made for lifting and considering it's a case and that metal under stress can crack easily...I think your better off staying away from that point.

OP, I did the EXACT SAME thing when I changed my oil last weekend. I didn't want to ask and sound silly but shit does happen. I would say you are fine because I've had no problems, and my crossbar is slightly 'dented' on my car as well (the 2nd one from the front).

NO problems... i made the mistake of not aligning the floor jack lifting plate gooves and put a dent in the cross member... nothing to worry about at all. now, if you crack it... then you have a problem...

A little bend is no biggie.

I always stick a 2x4 on top of the floor jack. About 3- 4 ft long, long enough to span the distance between the frame rails. Your still lifting in the center of the 2nd cross member. The 2x4 just spreads out the weight load, and prevents mucking up the center of the crossmember. Then, of course, jackstands once it is up high enough.

How are you supposed to keep it from wobbling? (Yes, I realize both of the rear tires are on the ground still....but it's not going to be what I'd call "stable"....is it?
Jack stands are the way to go!

I've just been jacking the car up and placing the jack stands on the side of the car (under the side skirts I guess), been doing this for the past year and a half and had no problems. In fact my car is sitting in the garage on jack stands right now.

Hard to do by yourself. I only use ramps when I have someone around to help.

To change oil, I use ramps! I get on the ramps by myself, using a hand-held mirror to see the left front wheel as it goes up the ramp.

To jack one side at a time for brake work, etc, use either the intersection of the cross-member and frame, or a piece of wood just inboard of the pinch weld, where the emergency jack would go if you had one.
