Park on incline, Head up? or Head down?

The scenario you describe....puts the most tension on the parking pawl & pin. Just saying The point is to alleviate there ever being any tension on those parts by applying the E-brake fully, after your foot brake is applied fully and the cars transmission is placed in park......... not force the transmssion parts to engage into park after you've applied the E-Brake. In fact..........if you simply reverse the process you agree in your own words above is correct ( The one you use while starting up the car and begin your driving) why wouldn't the exact opposite process not be readily (correctly) used while you are parking it?

I think it depends on the situation. I like to park "Battle ready" so I don't have to back out. The incline is never part of that decision.

No arguing, but some folks here are presenting their own disagreement with themselves and thinking it doesn't matter isn't designed into a precision component in a automobile power train ...........its a simple matter of correctly understanding the purpose of the systems of a automatic transmission ..........these aren't might be or could be mechanical possibilties. The OP asks a simple question.........its as simple as that.

Its all good. You know....I'd like to believe that we fellow posters offer knowledgable solutions that would help prevent damages to our other fellow posters cars first and foremost.....these solutions aren't/ shouldn't be based on thinking, what if's, might be's, unfounded opinions nor personal conjecture. I'm sure someone might ask " Why not wait until after the parking brake is applied before you'd put the car in park"......The answer. How would you honestly determine for fact that the car was actually engaged in park before walking away from it. In the OP's situation finding their car has inadvertantly traveled downhill later without a operator behind the wheel...........a disaster.

If you say incline ,it means parking nose up , if you have said decline , you would have to park nose down , the reason is that in USA we all drive on the right side of the road .

there is NO tension on the parking pawl at all when parked this way, the car is held in place with the parking brake only

I park nose up. My reason for this is if Im on an incline I want to back the car out at an angle so the nose of the car doesnt drag bottom.

It depends on which side of the road you are parking on. You have to park in the direction of the traffic. That's the law in most states. As others said turn the wheels toward the curb and I always use the E-Brake. A good habit to get in to, I also turn off the a/c before turning off the ignition so the car never starts with the compressor engaged. I don't know if it helps but is a habit I developed when I was starting out driving.

It's called a "PARKING" brake for a reason.... Seems simple enough
