The 2012 ZL1 - vs - 2013 GT500

New 5.8L V8 confirmed for 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Since the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 was introduced with 580 horsepower, rumors have been plentiful that the 2013 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 would get a new motor to out-muscle the ZL1 with upwards of 600hp and while there are no specifications available, the new Ford-UAW contract has confirmed that the 2013 GT500 will indeed sport a new 5.8L V8 engine.

Not bad for a Pony

I don't know. Eventually there will have to be a cap put in place on how much HP these new muscle/sports cars are allowed to have to be street legal. I mean unfortunately there are people killing themselves and others with just the stock 400+HP these cars have on them now. I do not mean to be a killjoy but I could see it getting out of hand. Look at all the fights that go on between all the different fanboy base brands now. They get pretty heated and are not always friendly. I remember when the 300 Z twin turbos came out and people were killing themselves or wrecking the hell out them on a pretty regular basis. I had a friend of mine that had that Z and he said it scared the hell out of him at high speeds because it felt to him like the car was starting to float as if he would lose control of it. I hope that the wars can go on but I'm sure we are getting close to having a limit on what a stock car can have legally. Just my opinion and I know it don't mean sh&t.

if they don't update the suspension package in a big way they can put all the motor they want and it won't matter.

the shelby super snake had 750hp and it was not any faster than the ZL1 should be in the quater and way slower on the track.

I hope they do make it a monster though competion is win win in the long run. Pushes the the manufacture to bring more to the table. The GT500 has been disapointing to me it is always underperformed for the money. You can always by a faster car for the money because the base c6 is a faster car and has a better waranty.

I remember when I had my '05 base C6 coupe and a '10 GT500 pulled up beside me on the toll road. We both looked at each other, nodded and mashed it for about a quarter mile...I pulled him by about half a car length. I hope the '13 GT500 is better competition for sure especially simce They've since added more power to the base C6 since '05

check out SVT forum and see what guys are running in a 1/4 mile just by changing the stock rear tires. You would be impressed. Stock GT500 with the SvT performance package leaves the mighty CTS-V, Porsche 911s, and M3s behind in a roadcourse so i guess those cars are huge underperformers with their heftier price tag? I own a '11 GT500 SVTPP and a SC'd SS but for carving corners, the GT500 is my pick. The 2013 GT500 is going to be a beast like the ZL1, can't wait for the comparo.

Your car must have been modded.
A friend of mine has a 2007 C6(auto) with a lid and tune and I beat him everytime we run them.
Now I'm trying to get together with him to take the cars to the road course that recently opened near here.

As JusticePete said in another thread the tires are the fuse in an OE vehicle. He meant that the tires will break traction before the powertrain breaks. Change the tires and all bets are off.

Well it works the other way too - you can put a locomotive engine up front but the tires and suspension setup are only going to handle so much torque. So HP isn't important really. Which car can use more HP given suspension and tire setup? That's what matters the most. Historically the GT500 hasn't been great in that area. More HP could make the car even harder to drive. It remains to be seen how well the ZL1 can handle its power but PTM and bigger tires can't hurt.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to the 5.0 in the Mustang GT, not high performance version in the Boss.

From what I see/read, the Camaro SS and Mustang GT performance are almost dead even despite the Mustangs 1.2L disadvantage.

those 300zx even na were pushing v8 horsepower for that time weren't they? with 2 less cylinders. so a 5.0 or 5.8 vs 6.2 isn't a good way to compare. its like a fat guy being compared to a big guy that's solid muscle imo. close to same size or not, the make up of it is what matters
