Also after the latest news I personally would stay away from a 2012 ZL1. The 2013 will probably be a better performer...and you don't have to wait much longer to get it. Remember the 1st year 2004 GTO? How about the 1st year Z06? The 2nd year cars had big improvements.

I was thinking the same thing earlier. Let Evan Smith drive a 2012 ZL1 and a 2013 GT500 same day, same track. I'd have to put my money on the Ford.

And I'm pretty sure that if Ford made significant efforts to cut weight in other areas, they would have advertised that too. Why would they remain quiet on weight saving measures? That would be another great selling point if it were true. I believe 3850lbs is what a base GT500 will weigh without options. What all the performance package options will add to that in the end is anybody's guess. |

After the dust has settled on the announcement I’ve had time to consider the upgrades to the GT500. In general they are trying to match the ZL1 where there was a deficit before. I’m not sure these Band-Aids will help all that much, but kudos to Ford for upping their game. Here are my thoughts:
2013 GT500 will probably cost more than 2013 ZL1 when you add all of the performance packages. The performance packages will be required to make full use of that 650 HP. The electronically adjustable Blisten dampers are inferior to MR suspension. The Blisten’s are adjustable from the ****pit from ‘street’ to ‘track’. This effectively softens the dampening for the street and stiffens it at the track. While a nice feature, the MR actually adjusts dampening as you drive and is a far superior system. How much of the HP will actually be usable in the lower gears? They have revised the gearing but how much it will help remains to be seen. I’ve seen nothing about upgraded tires. Traction issues will still exist. GT500 Brakes are still inferior to the ZL1, although perhaps performance will be close due to the extra weight of the ZL1. Revised gearing for traction and top speed… acceleration may not be as much an improvement as expected with that 100HP boost. They added a splitter and front fascia to increase the downforce. Last time I checked this car’s weight distribution was already front heavy. Add 100HP… can you say oversteer in the high speed turns? All said and done the 2013 GT500 is impressive, but maybe not AS impressive once you start digging past the marketing fluff of the press release. Let’s let the performance decide when the cars hit the streets. By the way, both the 2013 ZL1 and 2013 GT500 are scheduled to hit the dealers in the Summer (see reference articles above). That should end all talk of 2012 vs. 2013. as they are direct competitors.

I like how everyone is admitting defeat already and looking for 2013 as the answer. The fight is over before it begins? It's not looking good, but wait for magazine results first? It looks like the drag race is over, wonder how long before Ford post a 7:3x ring time?

So your going to take a car that is already traction limited to where the average times for 11 and 12 models are 12:30s and your going to add another 100 hp and more torque to it and pick up a full second? Have you payed attention to any of the GT500 tests outside of MM&FF? My neighbor has a GT500 that is so traction limited the best he can run is 8:60 in the 1/8, he spins completely through 1st and 2nd. This new 500 will have 150hp more than his model. This thing better have a hell of a traction control system.

Laughable stuff........ You have no idea what Dodge is planning......we all know something faster is coming....thats how the auto industry works...... The 6.1 SRT8's you guys have are already old news.....and the 392 will be also when the "answer" comes ...and you can bet they are not just gonna slap a supercharger on the current 392 as it is and call it a day....thats what guys do in a garage....
