yeah, I bet you could get over 400 hp out of a 5 litre DI V8. Lexus gets 416 out of their 5 litre in the ISF i think. Getting back to the 350 chevy would be cool 5.7 litre SIDI VVT with 450 hp and 450 ft-lbs and get 30 MPGs or so. That would be NICE

Oh for sure, I'd just like to see some DI LS3's or LS7's for that matter.

that would be pretty cool too. ~500 hp LS3 @ 26-27 mpg, ~600 hp LS7 @ 25 mpg. I'm not sure what would be better. A 30 mpg V8 or an insanely powerful one.

30 mpg's should be the sweet spot. You cant ask for better than that. After the first design of this engine series comes out i'm sure hp would increase from there as they improve the design.

35 should be the sweet spot. no reason to barely bump the bar up, we should be achieving great power and great (not good) mpg.

I think 30mpg is a stretch, especially while keeping the same power level. The 3.6 V6 isn't even quite there mpg wise.

Gotta agree, I'm looking forward to a DI V8 but if you are expecting more than an extra 1-2 mpg I think there's a very good chance you'll be disapointed.

One to two miles per gallon are not a big deal lets hope it comes with a significant hp increase like the article states. Cleaner emissions on start up was another plus but not a big one for me. So I guess the only real big upside would be more power. Okay Ill take it.

Direct injection increases the efficiency of the process. This can be expressed in 2 ways: increasing power or increasing fuel economy. Its always a compromise, I'm sure the V6 could have been 30 mpg if they cut the power back a bit. I think GM will work towards improving fuel economy of the V8's more than power. In the grand scheme of things, 500 hp is getting excessive for low cost cars, particularly when fuel economy is becoming more and more important than raw power.

GM has said the LS series engine is done. The next V8, will start a new series, no doubt with DI.

lol my redline with the 2.0 DI Turbo don’t get 30mpg. So where does a v8 fit in at over 30mpg? Not gonna happen for a while. Heck most the time if you get the auto camaro u will be cruising with only 4 cylinders... And well still not reaching 30mpg. The next generation of cars will of course be the DI route but with DI will come all the stinking nanny's that we currently have on the Kappa Platform. If they did do a v8 DI it will more than likely shrink in size to a much smaller v8... I’d say lower than 5.7 mark. But these engines can put nice HP out for their displacement. Of course mine is turbo'd but its over 300hp with only mod being turbo upgrade kit from gm.

As for the Sky RL and Solstice GXP, GM could definately get them up to 30+ highway mpg's with a six speed and possibly a few other tweaks, but costs would increase a bit and a little performance might be sacrificed. It still shows that a DI V8 isn't a magic bullet for 30 highway, but I would have said the 3.6 V6 rated at 29 also showed that. Last edited by Tal; 04-17-2009 at 01:05 PM. |
