I want a ZL1 bad but I can't afford a new one. Our plan right now is getting a slightly used ZL1 as a weekend car in 2015, I figure by then you'll be able to get a used one with low miles and in good shape for 25-30k. I don't mind waiting for a used one. The v6 we have now only has 13k miles, that car will last 5-6 years more pretty easily. My cts has 64k miles, I can get 150k out of the CTS before I think of trading it.

I like technicalities...

fwiw...ZL1 suspension comes from 'Ex-Delphi" manufacturer BWIGroup.

Yes indeed it does my point was more so that the ZR1's suspension is actually the last generation MSRC and that the ZL1 actually shares more similarities to the Ferrari FF suspension wise. Which I personally think sounds way cooler, a ZR1 is nowhere near a Ferrari in exclusivity.

I do not think the ZL1 will depreciate tht quickly... I highly doubt it. Its too much car and too limited production to drop that far that quick. Might want to plan on 2018-19 if thats what you want to pay for it.

I tend to agree...If you use a Gt500 as an example they sell roughly 3000 to 3500 a year? I suspect the ZL should be similiar so roughly 12 to 15k on the road in 4 years. Even now I only see a few Gt500s a year, and how many have they produced so far? The pricetag will keep it somewhat exclusive! My guess anyway!

I think he's at least $10-15k low in his estimate.

You do realize that you can switch insurance companies and/or vote for people who believe in liberty?

2012 ZL1 IS THE WATERSHED MOMENT FOR CAMARO

If people start adding all these "vanity" mods to it, like CAI, chrome engine service covers, LED sidelights, and all that kind of stuff, they will lose value. STOCK ZL1's will appreciate over time in my opinion. But altered? I don't see how they can hold value. Collectors and picky buyers will want original.

Knowing what GM put in THIS ZL1, it's hard to imagine there will be too many more coming with greater performance. I'n not naive, but how much is really noteworthy?

Looking back over the decades, the "pinnacles" are pretty easy to identify. Aside from the "pinnacle years", many versions of "whatever" were just "also rans"...

The 2012 ZL1 is just one of the "Pinnacle Year" accomplishments/milestones that will be revered.

Duplicates will come. Line extensions will come. But, the FAT LADY is SINGING on this one! That's my 02. and I am banking on it. Next years variety will be "just another version". 2012 was the "watershed" moment for Camaro. That's the ONE I want in on. If you are, consider yourself blessed.

All of my cosmetic mods will be very minor (ex LED sidemarkers like you mentioned). Keeping the original parts and and converting back to stock will be a non-issue. The only reason why I'm being conscientious about things like this is because I plan to keep this car for a very long time.

Who buys any modern performance car for it's long-term collectibility? Seems like there are hundreds of better options that offer a better ROI than some car. If you want a car that is almost guaranteed appreciate in value, spend your $55k on a classic muscle/pony car, not one of these most recent iterations.

Speaking for myself, I'm not buying this car to keep it for a very long time as an investment as a collectable, I'm buying and keeping it as an investment in making great memories and history throughout my life. This is going to be one heck of a ride in more ways than one.
