Wife and I took a trip to Europe a fews years back...it was very liberating to drive 120+mph from Berlin to Amsterdam.

I'd be happy if we had two seperate lanes on the highway that had a speedlimit of about 90mph.

I heart the autobahn. And would absolutely *love* an American instantiation. However, as we've all pointed out already, the current american driving standards and habits would not support an Autobahn. But, it is possible to remediate the issue in under a decade.
1. Training. We all agree. 'nuff said. License acquisition needs to be more than a joke. 2. Enforcement. I have a soapbox on this issue...which i will avoid the full extent of. But, speed is not the issue. Idiots who can't drive are. Tailgating, driving in the left lane, lack of signal use, failure to merge properly (cutting off or refusing to let another in), and rubbernecking. Love that about the autobahn. They don't pull the guy zipping around on the right when the wank in the left lane refuses to get over. They pull the one obstructing traffic.

I've heard that the licensing in Germany is much stricter and very expensive as well, they actually make sure that their drivers should be allowed on the road. I don't have a problem with that. Our testing is a joke, and the people I see on the road every day just scare me... cell phone in one hand, newspaper in the other, while tailgating someone, and yelling at the kids in the backseat... you get the idea. Until Americans learn to start following driving rules, and we actually start getting better training and testing I don't ever see this happening , no matter how much we all want it... It sure would be nice to be able to open it ( legally). Many of us are actually good drivers and this type of road would be a great idea, but unfortunately there are waaaaaay too many idiots out there.

An Autobahn would be wonderful. I graduated in germany and got to drive on it many times.
The main problem i see here is upkeep. Some of these states barely have drivable highways and imagine doing 150 on some of those roads. If we did get an Autobahn after a few years the states would be complaining that they don't have money to fix it then it would just be another crappy highway. Just my 2 cents. |

At least here in AZ most of the highways (once outside city limits) are 75mph roads.

No. There is a reason it costs THOUSANDS of dollars to get a license.
Been on the autobahn (lived in Germany for 4 years). I would never drive on an American version, it would be deadly. Can you imagine the 18 YO trying to put on her makeup, or the soccer mom talking on the phone? I say the same thing that if it ever snows here in phoenix enough that it sticks to the surface streets. I wont leave the house, the drivers of this great country have zero skills.

The intense training would not work out to well in the US as it does in Germany. If you don't qualify or have the money to get a license in Germany, you just take the superior mass transit system ( trains, subways, busses, trams ). They run much more often and efficiently.
In the US, people that are too dumb to qualify or lack the money for the training, would not be able to get to work without the driver's license. Our mass transit really sucks outside of the major cities. |

Why couldn't it operate like a toll road with entrance booths to check driver qualifications. I'd buy a Fast Pass window sticker for sure.

I've been saying this for years. My family takes a vacation out west every summer. There are huge expanses of empty road, where sports cars could easily and safely cruise at very high speeds all day long. (A few are so desolate, you could actually do 90-100 now without really having to worry about being caught
). The savings in driving time would net an extra 2-3 days of actual time at our destinations, so the hotel savings would offset the extra gas.Edit: Just checked the time stamps. Wow.
