Question Need help with rear diff.

Just changed out my rear diff oil and I used Royal Purple but when I filled it back up I did not use the whole quart, is this normal? the fill hole began overflowing and I even stuck my finger in there to make sure I could feel it by the threads and I could.

Rob,

Most likely not all of the fluid was drained out initially. Some people have recommended jacking up the front passenger's side to get a bit more fluid out.

Did you have the car level when draining or did you just jack up the rear?

not a fan of r.p. meself but unless you jake the front of the car up with the drain plug out you wont get all the old oil out.

I jacked up the one side of the Camaro to help drain the extra fluid out. When re-filling with R.P. it took the entire bottle.

Edit: This was from a post when I changed the fluid a few months ago.

Here is the TIP OF THE WEEK. After I thought it was done draining I figured there had to be some more still in there since the car was sitting level side to side. I got my floor jack out and jacked the front passenger corner up until the tire was a few inches off the ground. The rear diff started to pour allot more out of the system. Those who do not do this are not getting the entire old fluid out.

By the way another TIP OF THE WEEK (from someone else this time) place a hockey puck between the jack and the Camaro jacking point, this prevents the metal from being abused.

No need to redrain it; you got 90% of the fluid changed. Any metal parts were already stuck to the drain plug magnet.

How to hug your camaro
Buy the car that you would most like to get beat in. The other guy will always be faster.

The manual recommends you change it the first time at 1,500.

After that it differs based on how you drive it. If all you do is drive around town it's recommended to change it every 50k but if you enjoy the car and drive it hard than every 30k.

I have not read anywhere in the manual you need to change it at first service...I have a 2010 Camaro...are you sure?

I have 30,000 miles its probably been changed 4 times.

its quick, easy and pretty cheap and I always get shavings on the plug. I typically do it when I change the oil.
