It may have nothing at all to do with the caliper. It could be a combination of the caliper with the knuckle design GM used. That front knuckle is tied directly to yhr caliper mounting point. The knuckle can change the natural frequency of the caliper. The G8GXP has the same calipers but I have no heard of any weights on them. I would be curiouse to know if the front knuckles are the same.

Thanks Rodrunner. No, I was not trying to suggest that I am above anyone because I am an engineer. I was simply trying to reinforce, my means of association, that this probably was not an engineering solution, but rather a work around that was forced out the door by management. Similar situations have happened to me countless times. Stereotypically, engineers tend to care about precision, accuracy, and thoroughness while management tends to weigh schedule, budget, and engineering equally. Temporary “proof of concept” fixes making it out the door are sometimes the result.

I registered specifically to answer this question for you.
The weights in question come pre-installed on the calipers, they are not added to the caliper on the assembly line. They are there to reduce vibration and brake squeal. You will only find these weights on vehicles equipped with the 14" discs, and there should always be 16 little lead weights attached to the caliper. In addition, should you disassemble your Camaro, you will notice another similar weight installed on the rear roof bow. The exception is that this particular weight weighs in excess of two pounds - its purpose is to reduce vibration through the roof at speed. At the time of this writing, all vehicles with the 14" discs have these weights attached to the caliper. Including those that are still sitting on the assembly line. I would not expect this to stop any time soon, as I am sure you would not want loud brake squeals when coming to a stop in your nice shiny Camaro. |

Wow so it sounds like they still have not received 'fixed' calipers from Brembo and current production is still using the weighted brakes. Interesting.

I guess this means all of the Camaro's will and should have these weights on them and there are no plans to change the look anytime soon.Furthermore there is a similar weight installed on the rear roof bow which weighs two pounds and is there to reduce vibrations as well. Very interesting indeed. It sounds like there are no fixed calipers since they have already "fixed" them with the weights. Disappointing if you ask me.

Umm the weights did not come on the caliper from brembo... GM installed them at the factory idk where you got that info from.

Unlike most cars, the Camaro roof is reinforced by the reverse mohawk, but still needs in excess of two pounds of weight to reduce vibration at speed?
And John Ftizpatrick actually meant to say these weights will only be added to early, 15,000+ or so, builds of the Camaro SS? I will refrain from saying more at this time.
