The owner's manual says it's necessary in black and white, yet you're still asking? Jesus... Just put the recommended gas in the tank. If you wanted to use 87 and don't care about max performance, you should have bought a V6. If you can't afford to put the right fuel in it, then you can't afford the car.

Nice, hate on the V6. I would think purchasing a ZL1 or a vette for max performance would be more ideal.

Put 87 in my V6 once.... still a difference, and it's noticeable. Worse mileage, worse performance, just like the V8. You can put 87 in yours if you want, but I sure as hell won't. Speak for yourself, not just what a book says.

I don't own a v6. My car's manual clearly calls for high octane only...I understand that the v6 does not. I also understand that a fuse pull does nothing in the v6 because there is no high octane setting. Of course, I wouldn't know...I own an SS and would never put anything less than 91 in it.

If you do a search there are a few threads on here that discusses the issue, also if you do start running 91+ octane you'll want to do a "fuse pull" to reset the octane table....http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=38964

What is a "fuse pull" ? Are you saying if he has been running 87 and just switches to 91 + the car's computer will not react to the extra octane ?

Thanks

correct. The car isn't smart enough to "reset" the timing tables. You have to pull fuses #5 and #20 (reseting the ECM) to get back to the high octane table

High Octane only. Do a fuse pull and put 93 in it and you will be amazed at the difference.

My Camaro doesn't "ping or knock" using the lower octane, So, my question is, is the higher octane really necessary?
Neccessary? No.
Reccomended, YES

It's a bit amazing from my perspective to see this question appear in various forms time and again here... Guys are buying $30,000 - $45,000 Camaro SS cars and then trying to debate saving the cost of a single beer or a single burger at the detriment if the cars performance.

Only 93 goes in my ss. If you can afford a $40,000 car gas should be the last of your concern

in a word! "no!" your engine will "retard" the timing
so you can burn regular 87. if your car "knocks" THEN you should switch to 91
or better!..just sayin'

You think it doesnt ping or knock, thats only becuase your sensors and computer correct them faster than you can possibly hear, it retards the timing, and thus, lowers performance.

"only" $1.50 more! stuff doesn't cost enough as it is! i love the car but it's a "pig" and we all know it! if gas gets any higher decisions will be made by quite a few people!..just sayin'
