Truthfully, these early vin cars will probably not be scrapped if they fail quality control.

Usaully, they just get put in a line somewhere to be fixed or retro-fitted, (like CTF cars) which can take a couple of months since it is done on an individual basis instead of on an assembly line. After the car is fixed, they drive it as a company vehicle or sell it as a PEP purchase. GM just had 600-700 G8's that they ran a special on for PEP salesthrough gmfamilyfirst.com to get rid of.

But, they shouldn't have even had to tell you this. They should have automatically pulled a new car from production, shipped it to you, and told you and your dealer that they were not able to deliver the first VIN that you received. It's pretty dumb to be telling people that they are having QC problems when you are plunking down 35K for a new vehicle.

This just doesn't sound right at all. I have never heard of this happening before, anywhere. Somethings fishy.

Maybe Fbodfather can shed some light on this and either confirm what was told to you to tell you to get a good lawyer.

Something just feels off with all this...

Of course we could just all be paranoid but this would be the first time that I have ever heard of something like this. GM should be able to automatically slot you a car into production and haveit built and shipped in a week if this were really the case. The fact that you have to completely reorder is what makes this story untrue for me...

The rediulous replies continue. How is it a QC problem if they catch the problem with the car? Do you know what QC problems are? There are so many things wrong with this story I don't know where to start. We don't know for sure if he talked to anyone from GM. If he did, this happens to every product in existence. GM tightened up their tolerances. It could be anything from a bent frame to body panel alignment issues.

I'm thinking the dealer sold the car out from under you! I would keep an eye out for that VIN!

I'm no Toyota fan, but...

Quote:
Kaizen (改善, Japanese for "improvement") is a Japanese philosophy that focuses on continuous improvement [...]
The Toyota Production System is known for kaizen, where all line personnel are expected to stop their moving production line in case of any abnormality and, along with their supervisor, suggest an improvement to resolve the abnormality which may initiate a kaizen.
So, you're right. They don't send the car back. They stop the line, fix it immediately, and implement policies to avoid having the same problem again.

It doesn't seem to work any better (if my experience with Toyota quality and their JD Power reliability ratings mean anything), but they're trying just as hard and producing similar results.

I was told in an engineering class in college that auto manufacturers planned and expected something like 1% of their cars to be recalls or have major issues...that was 10 years ago...I'm not sure if it's nice to know that that they are working to make that 1% unacceptable nowadays, or that they can't make it 0% off the bat (after all the CTF stuff).

I have heard of another one locally that may get replaced. Whatever this problem is its major....not a bolt on part that can be replaced. Must be a bad stamping, fail to weld, critical weld in wrong location, locating hole for another part of the assembly in the wrong place etc. But its obviously serious and a good thing that it was discovered at the quality inspection.
I just hope its all been corrected on the line. It almost looks like you can order a car now and get it built pretty quick. That CGM posted today sure has a high quality paint job on it!

No the car never got to the dealer, as I said before. I've known the owner of the dealership for many years now. I have bought about seven vehicles from them going back to the mid 90's. I can tell you there is no way they would have sold off my car even if they did get it. we have a good long friendship with each other.

Unless you looked up the phone number and dialed it yourself how do you know he wasn't calling his buddy in another office/building/cell phone. I'm not trying to get you paranoid. I trust my dealer but I've met a few out there that should be in jail. If you got a Vin number you need to follow it up, at the very least call GM customer service with your order number and tell them you don't want to bother your dealer. Get the status of the order yourself with GM, It may take you a couple of tries but then you will know.

Whether or not it's caught by QC, the fact remains that somehow, if the OP is correct, the car got built THAT poorly by GM's paramount quality production facility, it had to be totally rejected! Makes me uneasy...if true.
