wheel spacers

Okay here is my question and I will do my best to describe what and why I am looking for.. I love the style of the factory wheels on my Camaro.. I do however wish they looked wider like the ZL1.. I do not want to drop a boatload of cash on widening the rear wheels.. Could I put good wheel spacers on the rear to give the illusion of a wider tire/wheel by moving the wheel outward or is this a no no. What issues would I have, how far could I go. I realize the best way is wheels and tires but would this work. Some of you guys really know your shit and I was hoping you could give me some guidance and if is possible what some of the parameters might be, who makes the good spacer as opposed to the ones that put the load on the lugs? You know ..stuff like that

Thanks
Jack

You would have to have some spacers custom made. There are a few I have seen people use but they are not the exact bolt pattern and hub size for our cars.
ex: http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=179599

I customized my own hub centric spacers but they are only 12mm and I had to use longer studs.

I don't know if 12 mm is enough for you, but it was perfect for my 18x8.5 fronts (post #9 in my CTS-V spares thread).

I really like how my 18x11 (48mm offset) sit flush with the rear fender. If you wanted your stock wheels (20x9 40mm) to sit flush like mine you could use this site (http://www.1010tires.com/wheeloffsetcalculator.asp) and see you would need a 17mm spacer.
